It will involve coots+ going for subban.

I'll be very surprised if the Flyers trade Couturier.

Would you guys do Coots, hagg, 1st for subban?

Yes but the flyers most NHL ready prospect is 3C.

Couturier is their best chip. You can't say we need him more than subban.

We will see

Will be interesting to me to see if Holmgren gets any flack for giving up a 2nd and 3rd (I believe) for Macdonald.

When he essentially/probably could have had him for the same contract as now in FA.

If they manage to go a bit deeper its worth it, but now? We shall see.

Why would he get any flack? It was a good trade, and they got him for market value. And we don't know what happens when other teams get involved to drive up the price.

They have plenty of other chips to trade. But Couturier would undoubtedly be the popular choice of other teams.

Doubtful; he's getting one of those picks back because they were able to move Meszaros

I honestly don't love the contract, but anyone has to concede that flipping a second-rounder for an NHL defenseman capable of playing 18 minutes a night...you do that every day of the week

They wanted to see what they were getting. Decided they liked it and signed him without a bidding war. What happens when the UFA label arrives is typically lunacy.

I always thought it was kind of a move you make when you are closer than they are. If they wanted him I personally would have been alright if they waited to the summer.

Just nitpicking a bit, he has grown on me. Pretty solid d-man, nothing spectacular but solid.

What other piece will be enough to frontline a trade to bring in a young top pairing type?

Voracek is too unique of a skill for us to give up.
We are not trading giroux
Simmonds not enough

MacDonald wasn't a rental player, which is obvious in that they signed him to a long term deal. When you have a need and have a chance to acquire a player like MacDonald, you do it. Much riskier to not get him in free agency. The best way to describe MacDonald is "set him, and forget him" Real steady player.

To get the kind of guy you're talking about, it'll take more than Couturier and a prospect or pick. It will cost Couturier & Simmonds or something similar. Teams don't trade those guys unless they're making ridiculous salary demands, are troublemakers or headcases or seriously underperform and show signs of being unlikely to reach potential.

It's why Jack Johnson gets traded 3 times in his first 5 seasons and Drew Doughty is untouchable

I still think Laughton and the 1st gets heavily shopped around for a D man. Maybe a prospect like Hagg gets included too for the right guy. Obviously that isn't enough to get you a Weber or Subban but there could be some interesting offers if we shop that.

I just fail to see how Laughton gets much ice time here unless he transitions to wing, which he apparently has extremely little experience playing. Our top 9 is largely set in stone for the next few years so unless someone else is shipping out I just dont see it. Maybe they can swing Vinny for Gardiner or someone of comparable value and open up some space?

I really like Roman Josi from Nashville. With Trotz out, and them being disappointing since that Weber singing they could be a good team to target.

Other squads looking for changes would probably include Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg. All of which have pieces of interest. Edmonton may be a team that's interested in Grossmann for example, but I don't really like what they would have to offer.

Leafs were stupid enough to give Phaneuf that contract so you never know.

Brodin is the wet dream, but I doubt that happens.

Seems like Toronto needs a center. But I doubt they'd give up Gardiner.

Josi would be a really nice add if he was made available. But even though Trotz is out Poile could still keep that team D heavy. I'm very interested to see the direction they move in.

He is the kind of player that they could target imo. Maybe not untouchable, but a guy with definite promise and fills a need. Isn't one dimensional.

I would rather give up assets for say a guy like Josi instead of Yandle or Enstrom.

I agree. A young all situation defenseman. He really impresses me. I don't see them moving him, but if they did, it would be a high price. They are defense heavy, and need some forward help. Always been that way.

So would you be comfortable paying Macdonald 6 million a year for 5-6 years with a NMC?
