After watching the second game, I have been noticing how the refs are quick to call penalties against the Flyers. Nothing like having some biased/reputation calls being made. I watched as Read took a swipe to the back of the head by one of the Rangers players, it happened a couple of times, and nothing was called. However, when the back of a hand by Simmonds slows down a Ranger when he is actually beating the Ranger to the puck, the refs call holding. The commentators had to slow down the video in order to see the back of his glove briefly touch the Rangers player. In addition, since it was close to the boards, he was protecting himself. My question is: why is the penalty calling so one sided? If Mason has a concussion, then why isn't that Pen's player suspended for knocking our D-man into Mace? If "the king" or somebody else was in goal, and that had happened......
Just sayin'.
I also need to mention a segment on the "life as a ref" program, on the NHL channel. It showed an NHL official going down before a game, to talk to the refs about calling close penalties whenever the action was around Ryan Miller. They never mentioned the other team's goalie, but they went out of the way to mention Miller, and how to protect him.
Nothing like protecting the "star players" in the NHL. All is not equal in my opinion.

The Flyers are gonna get reputation calls, and that's just how it is. The worst two were the Coburn play and the Flyers first one (Simmonds, I think) for holding early on. The Flyer player used his arm/glove to shield the player, not to hold onto him. The Ranger then slashed the Flyer, and the Flyer got a holding call. And that's just how it's gonna be.

I wonder how slow Akeson really is? Haven't gotten a chance to really see his speed or lack thereof. And as for his size, he's as big as G, Read, Rino, etc. His ability to defend seems a legit concern, but hopefully that was exaggerated because he was on a bad Phantoms team.

I agree. As to his speed/size he seems fine out there in our 2 game sample.

For this series it won't matter who is in net. If they play the way we know they can Emory will not loose them the series.

That Coburn penalty on Stepan was a joke. Fantastic defensive shut down play on a player driving hard to the net.

I realize that the penalties will be called, and I fully understand that. However, when there are unbalanced penalties, then I get a little frustrated. If Crosby slashes G's wrists, and G punches him back, then we all know that G will get the call, and not Cindy. Maybe the NHL should look at getting rid of just calling the retaliation penalty, and start calling both penalties.
The league still seems to focus on the wonderful shoot out, but they refuse to change some of the rules. If they ever decide to let a shoot out determine a playoff game, then I may just stop watching. Let the skills competition stay at the All-Star Game. Let the teams play.

The Flyers fans here must not be watching the same game. Although the Rangers had more PP chances, Philly STILL got away with a ton of slashes, spears, jabs, rabbit punches, and holds. That's the only way they can win against the Rangers - play like 1970's thugs and hope the referees don't call 90% of it. And that's what happened. The Rangers didn't make them pay, and now the series is tied. Had the Rangers played even halfway to their potential today, they would have overcome the cheap stuff and won anyway. On to Philly. The Rangers are better on the road than at MSG anyway.
