And what was his record in those 4 games? How many did he play poorly in?
- jmatchett383

This whole conversation is moot. Mason didn't play a playoff game yet. He's the better goalie. When he's healthy, you play him. I don't think anyone advocates pulling Emery in the middle of the ECF/SCF because Mason's neck is feeling better. But get a grip. It's been 2 freaking games. Nothing is "owed" to Emery. He earned his role as a backup, and he's doing what he's paid to do; and doing so admirably. Either way, I'm giving Mason at least the rest of this series and next series to claim his spot back. Past that, much more goes into it the decision-making then just entitlement and the "hot-hand".

Wish I knew what that was like. I've been married for nearly 22 years, so I haven't been right for nearly 22 years!

I'm confused. Last time i checked, getting a 5 was terrible, no?
- Flyersgod

AP test is grade from 1 to 5, 5 being the top score.

apples and oranges. but i agree mason should go back in if he's ready.
- hammarby31

The thing is, even if Mason declares himself ready, it's an injury that can plague his performance. I think it's pretty clear he has concussion/whiplash issues. What if he comes back and doesn't play well. Does that force Berube to go back to Emery? Once again we have a goalie carousel on our hands.

If Mason was healthy to start the series, and didn't play well, I would be totally fine leaving him in for every game. I think the injury and the potential of it effecting his level of performance muddies the water a bit.

Both sides of this Emery/Mason thing are making some valid points, but I'm surprised how strong the assumption that Mason is the better goalie for this situation is, considering the last time he made it this far, he thoroughly crapped the bed despite a fantastic regular season, triggering his downward spiral.

Maybe Emery isn't as good of a goalie compared to Mase, but at least you kind of know what to expect out of him. Mason's still a playoff wildcard.

I had some advanced placement classes in high school, better never had a grading scale of 1-5.

GiG can probably explain it better than me, I don't have first hand experience with the AP test.

From the Pens Blog:

Last nine playoff games both Crosby and Malkin have zero goals combined. That is over 20 periods of hockey if you include overtime.

Dating back to last postseason: Malkin has just one point in even strength situations, nine playoff games. Eight out those nine games Malkin had zero points during five-on-five situations.

Crosby only has one point in five-on-five situations in his last nine playoff games. Seven of his last nine playoff games he been held without a point during five-on-five play.

Crosby has just three points in his last six playoff games, with zero goals, and is a -4.

Malkin has just two points in his last six playoff games, with zero goals, and is a -6.

The above makes me so very happy!!

I feel better about Mason though. He's overcome a lot. I don't think a bad goal is going to unravel him.

There is a much greater standard deviation with Mason. He may be spectacular or bad. Emery will be steady, but won't make many post to post saves unless he really anticipates the pass coming.

I would rather go with Mason though. I feel the team is going to need above average goaltending to win the series. Emery was certainly above average yesterday, but I worry about his ability to consistently come up with the big saves in big moments.

Pietrangelo? No, I know who he is. Coatsey can't pronounce his name the same way twice, but I know who he is.

He "crapped the bed" on a team that only made the playoffs BECAUSE of Mason. The jackets that year were not a playoff team. They were a team that had a goalie that had fantastic season that got them there. Fact that this year is how long it took them to get back to the post season proves it.

Well I can only assure you that now, it's definitely 1-5.

Colleges honor 5s and sometimes 4s for AP credit. Walk in there after paying like $80 to take it, and then hope the money was worth it

It was the same 1-5 system back when I took them. Which was sometime during the Jurassic era!
