So Gostisbehere is making his pro debut tonight for the phantoms I believe....wish I could see that. That would be way more fun than watching the flyers now

Stralman is quietly our most improved player over the past couple seasons. He's an excellent defenseman that's unfortunately (for us) priced his way out of Manhattan. He rejected a $9M/3 year deal earlier this season and looks like he will be a salary cap casualty, although there was a rumor that he might want to return to Sweden.

Staal often gets overlooked too. As far as I'm concerned, he's a bonafide #1 defenseman who can play 25+ mins a night shutting down the Crosby's and the Ovechkin's and the Perry's of the league night in and night out just as well as McDonagh and Girardi.

- rangerdanger94

I might go as far to say that Staal Stralman did a better job on Giroux then the first pair.
Staal is really good.

I agree with that last sentence wholeheartedly. The Flyers, as a team, simply didn't play well.

EDIT: Another factor, the Flyers have to stop sagging and giving the Rangers easy entries to the offensive zone. Coburn and Timonen are really the only two that are really good at this. If MacDonald was a bit more effective at stepping up to stop zone entries, I'd have less issue with his deal.

- Jsaquella

MacDonald is not a physical defender that is going to step up and physically make hits at the blueline in my opinion. Zone entry numbers just can't be used as a flat number. Each situation needs to be looked at, and judged accordingly as to whether the defenseman made the right read and the right play. And zone entry numbers suffer the same flaw as a lot of advanced stats do, and that is that it simply cannot eliminate the role of the other players in what happens on the ice. And a defenseman can't be held accountable for a successful zone entry by the opposition, simply because it happened on the same side of the ice that the defenseman is on. It's a team game. And zone entry numbers can only tell you what happened, not why it happened. Nor can it be used to quantify how good a player is, or isn't. In my opinion.

You know what else could help the Flyers break out?

If our dmen could skate with the freaking puck instead of standing still attempting to thread the needle to yet another stationary player while the Rangers buzz around them like annoying ass bees.

Im getting a little annoyed that the national and local media is focusing so much on the Akeson penalty as if its all his fault. The team played poorly overall. I see the Akeson penalty as an unfortunate break.
- PhillySportsGuy

I personally feel bad for the kid. I think it was a complete accident. He was out there giving his all, and he just lost control of his stick. It's a shame. I see it as a team loss. And I don't think the Flyers, to a man, played well enough to win. Emery aside.

they don't even need to skate it out ... just make quicker decisions, and either make a short pass or dump it out of the zone. Too much hesitation when they get the puck.

Cmon man......we all know where this is going to end up. I'd rather watch maybe our only ray of hope that could put the fear of god in these tight checking teams that swallow the flyers breakouts.

It could have helped if the team killed it off or, at least, one of the double minors. Penalties are only bad when the other team scores. That's how the media views them.

Good thing I didn't say "physically make hits" at the blueline.

Because we all know what out and out hitting machines Kimmo Timonen & Braydon Coburn are. I'm talking about simply stepping up and challenging at the blue line, and fore opposing players to either dump the puck in and chase it or force them to have to get around the defenseman, rather than simply skate into the zone.

Nice attempt to change the wording and to make it sound as if I'm using the stats, because I'm not. It's a comment based on watching the games, and seeing that Timonen and Coburn are far more active at challenging opposing players at the Flyers blueline than MacDonald, Streit, Grossmann or Schenn.

So save your opinion of stats for instances where somebody actually uses them to make a point, mmmKay?

on the second goal they were truly dominated, the first one took a bit of a flukey bounce but the second goal was some nifty PP work

fine killer instinct the NYRs showed there
