AHL time can just as easily ruin a goaltender as help him. See Poulin, Kevin. He very well might belong there next year, but I'd give careful consideration as to just where he should be after a full camp this year. At this moment, he definitely looks like someone who needs more time. Still, this offseason could be the biggest leap in his progression career wise.

In no way do I want the Isles to depend on Nilsson for any siginificant role next year, but I wouldn't say that his being here would be worse for the club than say Brodeur joining up for a year.

Totally different situation than poulin. Nilsson has less than 50 Ahl starts in two and a half years.. That's a little more than a half a season. Anders needs playing time

hmm...3 hours ago you said "but I will also not be upset if he did signed here", was this just a defense so you wont be made when it happens?

See what this teams does to me. I am as screwed up as them. I mean it would not be the worse thing in the world but at the same time I rather another goalie

Isn't that the point of having Nabokov around?
This is my point: While Brodeur is unquestionably one of the all time greats, he is no longer great. In fact he's pretty damn average. Nabokov is 3 years younger and will likely sign on for the year. Signing two geriatric goaltenders on a team that has frequent defensive breakdowns and odd man rushes against is a recipe for disaster. So in that case, my options would be like so:
1. Sign or trade for a true starter to pair with Nabby
2. Sign or trade for a true starter to pair with Nilsson
3. Sing Brodeur, say bye to Nabby and keep Nilsson up to learn from one of the best. (this one would make me nervous given Brodeurs age)

In no case do I want to see a 39 and near 42 year old goaltender on the same team.

even that is very generous

I think the Vanek and Moulson ships have sailed. I'd like Jagr on a one-year special, but I have a feeling he might be in somewhat high demand, and wouldn't want to fall back on being an Islander. There aren't too many sure bets on the FA list at forward after the biggest names the Isles will have no shot at. Do you take a chance and make a strong offer right away to one of Gaborik, Heatley, Penner, who all come with their own risks (injury, motivation, etc)?

On D, what's the story with Orpik? Is he really heading for FA? I'd trade for his rights and make a ridiculous offer (no prayer if he hits FA, and probably not much of a chance even if they trade for the rights, but worth a shot...let him hear the number and turn it down). That's exactly the kind of physicality the D is sorely missing.

For G, I don't know...something. Maybe Halak...he seems like a guy that might be available early while people are fighting for Hiller and others.

Callahan I think would be a waste of time that would be better spent getting a head start on other teams' "plan B" players. He's going to have too many teams falling over him. The Isles would be like the Whos in Whoville shouting "We are here!" while no one listens. Cammalleri would be a good shot to take if he was willing to come here. Vrbata...other than knowing he was on Phoenix, left for a little while, then went back there...I couldn't tell you much about him at all.

I've seen the rumblings...but I have to think that if a solid playoff team expressed interest he'd go there rather than signing with the Devils...or Isles for that matter, obviously.

True, Nilsson has 75 career AHL games (compared to Poulin's 109, not a big difference). That said, Nilsson is also 24 now and has a couple of seasons in the SEL as well. I don't totally oppose him getting time in the AHL, but I would simply caution against October decisions being made in April. He has his first full offseason to hone his skills after time in the NHL. Let's see just what type of goalie shows up this fall first.

devils are a solid playoff team-- between broduer being a whiny female dog on his way out and the devils going 0-12 in shootouts, that cost the team PLENTY and a playoff spot.

with schneider getting the bulk of starts and allowing time to work on shootout moves--plus the addition of a forward or 2, devils are going to be solid next year!!

Eh, I just don't see it. Bubble team maybe, but not a solid playoff team. And I say that with full recognition of the team I root for.

Yeah..I don't see them as a playoff team. As for Jagr, he stated this was one of the most enjoyable seasons he's ever had in the NHL, which I really find hard to believe. I wanted the Isles to sign him prior to this season and would be plenty happy to have him for a year next season.

So if you're the Flyers tonight, do you run Queenie in period 1, or wait until the second?

They should dress Rosehill for game one and give him two sticks and let him skate around like a maniac

They'll be running macdonagh definitely. If they do it cleanly they can get the rags off their game just like they did with the pens the last couple of times they met in the playoffs.

signing Brodeur would be a terrible decision, one that would leave us in the bottom 5 without a pick next offseason.

Okay you are contradicting yourself. So if you agree that Nilsson needs more time in the AHL then why do you say that he is a better option than a proven NHL goalie?
Even though he is older he would still help the younger guys

- kasperrko

because Nilsson isn't ready and Brodeur is awful.

neither option is one that gets this team to the playoffs. You guys arguing over this is just stupid on both fronts.

I hate everything about the Philly franchise but I am pulling hard for them to eliminate the rags early.
