I do think that tracking a player's trends over a long sample size does hold value.
You can't dismiss advanced stats based on anecdotal evidence. And cherry-picking 1 good play to illustrate that player X is great is just that: cherry-picking.

You don't understand hockey. If a guy is being used as a top line or top pair player and unsuccessful, he is useless. Depth doesn't matter in the NHL.
- PhillySportsGuy

Exactly, they have guys that should be on the 2nd line in the AHL playing 2nd line in the NHL because guys they get rid of guys like Streit and Amac.

RFA defensmen I would offer sheet if I could. I know the rules that you can only do it because of what you give up but also possible low risk high rewards.

PK Subban - Would have to be high offer and liely to be matched. Not low Risk
Del Zotto - Maybe a trade or free agent if no offer from NSh
Dmitry Kulikov
Sami Vantanen - probably not likely
Brendan Dillon - probably not likely
Tyson BArrie
Eric Gelinas
Simon Deprese - just to piss of Pitt
Matt Barkowski
Mattias Elkhom

What advanced statistic measures Patty Kane's skill level?

I don't think any statistic can quantify that.

Or how much talent is needed to execute this pass:

But advanced stats can tell you that when Kessel is on the ice with Bozak, Bozak tends to get more points. Or that Phaneuf plays the opposition's best players compared to any other defenseman on his team. Yea...no poop.

The success of an Offer Sheet relies on a drastic overpayment towards to a player, to the point where the other team walks away from the player, and takes the compensation. Are all the players on that list, that type of player?

His points totals?

You don't need advanced stats for that.

They aren't willing to overpay ANYONE. Sometimes, you just need to bite the bullet in order to keep some organizational depth.

So you're saying Kunitz's skill level is comparable to Patty Kane's?

You're wrong. They offered max term and over $8M (closer to $9M I believe) for Vanek and offered Kovy $10M per year. They also offered Erhoff a poopload but he said no and signed for less in Buffalo.

They are very different players. Not sure what your point is exactly...

You're looking for a stat that describes the way a player can dangle the puck?

You'd know that if you "watched the games ©"

They will be a more attractive destination in Brooklyn and with new ownership.

The Philadelphia Flyers have made the playoffs 17 times in the last 19 years, and one of those misses was a 48-game season last year.

The New York Islanders have missed the playoffs 15 times in the last 19 years, and one of those makes was a 48-game season last year.

A 48-game season where the Islanders finished 8th, six points ahead of the Flyers.

I say this because even the blind/deaf/dim can see one thing:

If the Flyers are making a move that the Islanders didn't do, it's probably gonna

A) Result in the Flyers...making the playoffs
B) The Islanders...not making the playoffs

That's just reality. Mark Streit, Andrew MacDonald, whatever.

One of the franchises listed above is actually competent. The other? Not.

Basically yes, that is what I'm saying. Stats can only tell you so much and watching the game and watching the player play consistently tells you a hell of a lot more than Corsi can ever tell you.

I believe you don't quite understand the idea here.

Just like every other stats, "advanced" stats are a tool to complement the evaluation of a player.

They aren't meant to replace your (frank)ing eyes. They are meant to illustrate how a player performs under various situations over a long period of time.

You can offer something where your only giving up a 2nd round pick. Like when Clarke offer sheeted kesler. it was just high enough to make vancouver think about it because it was for potential. I know potential can get you fired but can also make you look like a genius.

For some of those names I would be willing to try. Obviosuly PK would be a different animal but others might make a team think twice depending on other holes they have to fill

If you read my original post, I said that advanced stats are good to help support an argument but shouldn't be the #1 reasoning, so I guess we agree. My previous posts are more directed to the people who say "Phaneuf is a top 10 defenseman in the league because of his QoC." Yea, but if you watch Phaneuf play, you see him constantly get beat to the outside by speed and be terribly inconsistent. "No it doesn't matter because his QoC is higher than Subbans!"
