Yes, but Pronger's cap space has to be under the cap before we can use it to start the year. That can create serious problems if we need to make moves in free agency. Unless Timonen is willing to wait until the season starts to sign a contract.

I stated that the Flyers would have to do some maneuvering. In the same way that they would've had to in making the offers to Suter and Parise. And in the OS to Weber. There are ways of making room that is needed.

There's no doubt that Holmgren chose to sign Bryzgalov. Snider had to okay the financials, and okay the CBO. But I don't think Snider involves himself to the level of which specific players to sign, trade, etc. He leaves that to the Hockey people.
- MJL

When the owner says "fix our goaltending" then he is absolutely saying "get me the best goaltender available," so for that moment in time, he absolutely told Holmgren to bring in Bryzgalov

I like Paul Holmgren, and I respect Ed Snider. But no way Holmgren survives that without Snider's fingerprints being all over it to begin with.

When Snider said, "We made a mistake," he wasn't just using that pronoun for the hell of it

IMO people are getting carried away with Rinaldo. At least one of the 3 penalties called against him was borderline. The hit was dumb because of the timing, but was it really that bad. Sure suspend him make an example see, bad hit hit the head suspension. Fine what ever. The guy was leaning over and there was no way at that speed he could have stopped himself. The Sabre's players head was at shoulder height. For me the worst part was his leaving his feet. There have been much worse hits that have gone unpunished.

Also to say Rinaldo is a fourth line players, so he really shouldn't have a huge impact on this team. Well don't blame him, blame the top guys for not showing up every game. The few games he has been the guy playing the hardest shift after shift. Give me a team full of guys that play like that every shift. He needs to learn to control himself better. Come playoff time, he will really need to watch himself.

Yes it was stupid, but the Flyers need him out there. They are a better and harder team to play against.

Yes, it was a really bad hit. And Rinaldo could've avoided it. He was a predator against a vulnerable player.

I agree that when he's playing well he is an effective player for the Flyers.

Good post.

For my sanity I'm just staying out of the whole debacle.

Snider had to okay the financials and length of the deal. So he did have a hand in it. But I don't think Snider had anything to do with specifically choosing Bryzgalov. I think all he did was give the mandate to fix it. Not how to fix it.

Rinaldo got off a bit light, imo. Could have easily been ten ... but it being the end of the regular season might have saved him a bit.

The worst part is that (assuming we make the playoffs) the refs will have an EXTRA keen eye on him, and he could very well end up getting extra minors based on this suspension.

stupid, stupid play, Zac.

He could have tucked his arm back in and not left his feet and not hit Ruhwedel at all, let alone hit him in the head.

Even if one of the three penalties was borderline, there were still two others that weren't and were the result of undisciplined play on his part.

I don't deny the guy is a hard worker and can be a good agitator, but he can just as easily be a huge liability and hurt the team. Rinaldo is a guy that seems to take one step forward, one step back and often ends up hanging himself when he gets more rope from the coach

CapGeek has them projected with $11,558,571, including Pronger. If the cap is indeed $71mm, they can go up to $78.1mm in the summer under the 10% overage.

Plus, if they bring in Subban, there's no need to re-sign Gustafsson.

It's doable, but not advisable,

- Jsaquella

I was also assuming a 68mil cap next year. I thought that was what was reported.

Edit also the flyers can't take Pronger's LTIR until the season starts so we can only go to 73.2mil in the off season.

Flyers could handle that potential situation by simply not dressing him in the playoffs.

Snider issued a mandate, Holmgren filled it. IMO, Snider tied Holmgren's hands. He had to address the goaltending, an really ended up bidding against himself to some degree, because of Snider declaration.

I doubt Snider said get me Bryzgalov.

The Flyers can place Pronger on LTIR at the end of training camp. But they have to wait until the first day of the season to maximize the LTIR space.

If the cap is set at 71mm, the Flyers can go to $78mm. Granted that counts Pronger's money as well, which drops it to just over $73mm.

Again, it's doable. I wouldn't do it myself, but they can finagle an OS.

But all of the good UFAs are going to be gone by than. I was just saying we wont have that space to make a move in free agency.

It just gets very iffy if the cap does not increase as much as they said it will and only goes up to 68mil because of the "weak Canadian dollar" stuff. We would have to hope Timonen would sign for less than 5mil to make things fit.

I think that's exactly how it played out. Water under the bridge at this point. They recognized the mistake, and used their vast resources to make it go away.

Well, true, but again, if they sign Subban, they're not going to need Timonen.

I'd rather they avoid an OS. I hate giving up the picks, it makes the cap situation a mess and it hampers other needed moves.

NHL.com is useless for that.

There was a delayed penalty on the Rosehill hit on Liewen but the Sabres scored on the delay. The commentators mentioned that Liewen was still down and shaken up just before they scored. Buffalo reports he has a concussion from the hit.

What other big free agent tenders were out there? Snider may not have mentioned Bryzgalov by name, but it was implied. Sniders public statement meant one thing. Holmgren, go out and get me the best goaltender available. Pretty cut and dry.
