Fast is poop. These bands and Dream Theatre = guitar masturbation. Can't stand it. For fast+good, try Buckethead.
- ThirdEye

So you're saying bands like Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, and Hammerfall are "guitar masturbation?"

The best "fast" guitarist in my opinion is Alexi Laiho from Children of Bodom. The vocals are kind of bad but they have like the greatest cover of Aces High from Iron Maiden. Its sick.

Because they wanted it raw, vintage, and authentic.

I'm speculating, but that certainly could be the reason.

That's why the Beatles put their "live" recordings from the roof onto Let It Be. Hell in the beginning of the album version of Get Back, you can hear Billy Preston still warming up on the keyboard 15 seconds into the song.

Maybe they wanted that way. It doesn't have to be perfect if you don't want it to be. That's the beauty of art, isn't it?

- Giroux_Is_God

It's possible, but subsequent releases were much more refined.
I just think they're a fairly boring band with a lot of filler.
Stairway to Heaven is absolutely amazing, however.

Sure can. My dad, who LOVES Led Zeppelin, says that Led Zeppelin I has the most mistakes of any studio album he's ever hard.

If they're really that great, why didn't they notice there were mistakes? Did they not notice? Not care enough? Do too much acid to notice? If you're an exceptionally talented band, wouldn't you want to put out the best quality of your songs possible?

- jmatchett383

It's incredibly raw. I've never picked up on a ton of mistakes... but I'm the type of person who leaves any in-studio banter in our band's mixes. I like that kind of crap.

It was also their first album... they were probably incredibly high and relatively inexperienced with a real studio setup.

Kyuss is probably the best metal band ever, but they got almost no recognition because their engineers were the goddamn worst. Thankfully Josh Homme took control, re-arranged the chairs and turned them into QOTSA. Thankfully they have some of the best engineers and finest sounding albums.

You don't believe this. If you do believe this... stop believing it. It isn't true.

I'm not saying that to be mean. I'm saying that because if that is really what you classify as best, you're missing so much actual great music.

- ThirdEye

I'm sorry... You actually have no idea about Mark's ability do you? And I said contemporary rock, excluding guys like Pretrucci, Vai, etc...

I'm not kidding you, look it up for yourself. Mark is BLISTERING fast, can shred with the best of them, literally...

AND TO CLARIFY, I said he is one of the best guitarists in contemporary rock, not that Alter Bridge is the best band, or that their music is god. I said his ability is among the best, if not the best.

I'm literally not kidding you, fan or not I don't care, but if you honestly think he isn't, you've been living under a rock for a while my man...

I can't tell you because I've never heard them (I suck at expanding my musical horizons in the past few years) but if they're like Dragonforce, yeah, that's what I'd call it.

I never liked QOTSA. I'm more of a Metallica/Pantera/Euro "harder" metal (although I dislike the more "growly" new stuff). But for "classic" metal sound, if you will, I'll take The Sword.

No, DragonForce plays fast just to show they can play fast, and Dream Theater can't write an enjoyable song to save their lives.

Blind Guardian are the godfathers of "epic metal" if you will, and the entire band is solid.
Rhapsody of Fire writes some of the finest technical metal ever. They play complicated music (well, guitar anyway) because it fits their music, not to show how good they are.
Hammerfall is just fantastic.

Slayer and Metallica are two of my favorite metal bands. I guess that is kind of cliche, but you really can't go wrong there.

But I listen to a lot of different types of music as long as it doesn't suck.

Well yeah, hardcore goes through swings. It was huge back in the late 90s, died in the mid-00s, came back up around 08, and is in a big downward spiral right now.
- jmatchett383

I tend to think hc was a moment in time kind of thing... full of purpose and energy for a split second, before it quickly became bereft and formulaic.

The NFLPA is investigating the Eagles now. They feel the Eagles leaked information to the press in order to spin the release as gang related.

Jackson has an interview with Screamin' A. Smith tonight on ESPN.

I'm hoping these two things will prompt the Eagles to finally speak out and reveal the truth.

I've been hearing some folks saying they felt the gang stuff was Eagles spin. It'll be interesting to hear this.

I just don't get why they did all this. Why couldn't we just trade the guy?

I don't think the release had anything to do with the gang stuff. I think they wanted to get rid of him. Once the gang thing came out, they knew his trade value would be nothing.

/farts

DeSean Jackson was released because he makes too much money and he's a pain in the ass. Period.

The fact that DeSean Jackson didn't even merit a phone call from the Chiefs (run by the guy who drafted him and extended his contract once) on his availability likely tells you how big of a pain in the ass the guy is behind closed doors and in the locker room.
