Who challenged him after the Toews hit? Who did he refuse to fight?

I think people are complaining about nothing because they love to complain about something.

- carcus

Your right, not a soul stood up for Toews.

What bothers me is that Orpik has been making a name of himself by doing this all year. He hurts star players and nothing comes of it. Erickson this year after just coming back from a concussion and Toews now, and they are not the only two this year.
Marchand needs an ass beating if he try's to injury someone and he will take it but orkip always runs or gets away clean. Not including thortons assault and battery.

I'm not talking about that game, I'm talking about him and his style of play in general

the hawks didn't feel like retaliating was their decision

he might not be so lucky next time

There are plenty of guys in the league who don't fight.

For all you bruins fans who don't have a problem with the hit remember it when someone retaliated by going after Crosby and injures him.i am not an advocate of going after a star player and would rather have someone dump the puck into orpiks corner and take a run at him making sure you finish the check high in an upward launching motion
I also blame the coach since orpik has a history of trying to and in some cases injuring players with his style of play. Orpik is a cancer for team chemistry with his play so keep defending him

- molly2522

With all due respect, you don't know what the f*ck you are talking about. Orpik is the longest tenured player on the team, and one of the most vocal leaders in the locker room. The lengths that some of you babies will try to go to to make a clean hard hockey hit into some kind of assassination is really freaking incredible.

The way your team is playing, we can have a foursome. Perhaps Toews will join us if he's feeling up to it? Might be better for him to try a sport where you are actually encouraged to keep your head down.

And the ones who employ the players? or pay to watch? Are they happy when the team gets scored on when one of their defensemen are in the box? or placed on IR? More and more players are coming out against "the code" and fighting in the league. this trend will continue over the years thank goodness
- ChrisMS

The people who pay to watch go absolutely nuts when players drop the mitts

As for your trend this was the most recent poll I could find

https://ca.sports.yahoo.c...n-fighting-175557533.html

98% in favour of fighting in 2011, followed by 98% in favour in 2012

Fighting won't go anywhere until the families of guys who end up with debilitating brain injuries sue the league....or until someone a actually dies on the ice during a fight. When one of those events occur, it will be banned so fast that it will make your head spin.

The lawsuits against the NFL had a direct result of significant changes to the way the game is officiated meant to reduce the risk of head injuries. You can dismiss that if you choose, but NHL legal counsel is surely watching that, and if the biggest sport in the USA is afraid enough of lawsuits to make substantial changes, you can bet the NHL will follow suit. The NHL doesn't have the kind of deep pockets that the NFL does, so the downside risk of a class action lawsuit is even more potentially catastrophic.

*edit* the primary difference between the leagues is that the NHL apparently isn't smart enough to get out ahead of the issue, even when guys like Boogaurd start dying....they will end up being reactionary when something really catastrophic happens that truly threatens their wallets.

That lawsuit is based on criminal negligence of team owners, doctors, yada yada yada who were aware of the long term effects of the violent hits and hid that info from players and knowingly rushed them back to action before they should have.

Unless evidence like that is found players suing the NHL will have no leg to stand on.

I'm sorry that was a clean hit. I can't believe this is an issue. And I HATE everything about the penguins. It's unfortunate he was injured, love toews. But it's a part of the game.

People get injured all the time, sometimes by barely getting touched, and sometimes by big crunching hits. That's life. That's hockey.

Let's ask Steve Moore how well dropping the gloves to answer for a hit worked out for him.

Coming out and saying, "I'm not going to fight." is ridiculous though.
The only player to say that should be Alex Semin.

And you think players who have ended up playing through concussions because they are afraid of losing their spot in the lineup couldn't argue the same thing? Any lawyer worth his salt would have a field day with the way the NHL implicitly allows fighting, and even promotes it as part of the game, while evidence that long term effects of head shots piles up. I enjoy a good hockey fight as much as the next guy, but anyone who can't see the writing on the wall that it is coming to an end in its current form is either out of touch with reality, hopelessly naive, or both.

They can't argue the same thing because the NFL players have proof that people concealed information and knowingly rushed injured players back into the lineup, the NHL players don't have that. I haven't seen an NHL contract but I assume there's something in there about injury risks that lawyers can easily hide behind, and if players chose to fight and chose to play through concussions for fear of losing a roster spot that's their decision. If any lawyer worth his salt could have a field day with the NHL it would have already been done

Fighting is probably on the way out but I plan on enjoying it while it lasts, and I can only hope it won't be soon

Ovi comes to mind. If you want the pinnacle of a guy who looks for guys with their head down and then tries to blow them up, it's ovi. He never fights, but I guess since he is a star player, that is fine. Subban also comes to mind. The only time he ever drops the gloves he immediately grabs the other guy and tackles them so they can't throw a punch.
