I hope Ottawa is the next on the market.. With an owner who wants to spend near the cap.

The issue is simple: a team with that TV contract, playing in NYC, is an attractive proposition, however, saddled with the debt it has accumulated over the years, it's not worth anywhere near what he's likely asking for it unless it becomes successful before he sells it- and in order for it to become successful, that means he's going to have to at least spend the money it takes to hire people who know what they're doing insofar as managing the on-ice part of the deal. He can't just keep his incompetent a$$ sucks in place, and yet think that the franchise is magically going to be worth $300M, simply because it moved to a more profitable ZIP code. He's going to have to try harder than that.

Well Prokhorov is no spring chicken, Im sure he knows exactly what hes willing to pay for it... he certainly has the money to shoulder the debt until it starts turning a profit.

Prokhorov should be bidding on this team. Would be the best thing for this franchise... probably the only thing that would make them consistently relevant.
- aecliptic

If money was spent on the right pieces & a competent GM would have this team relevant before the move to Brooklyn. Whoever becomes the next owner will inherit a team on the rise if $$$ is spent properly and NHL management & coaching staff instituted.

My only thought there is that I think Wang let it be known at least a year ago that this team was on the block- I heard it from a friend of mine who works in the business (who has no interest in the Islanders, whatsoever) a LONG time ago, prior to this season. I'm guessing that if Prokhorov wanted to buy them, he would have by now- he'd have ZERO trouble writing the check, as you say. Then again, the NHL is a secretive as Wang is personally, and if the asking price is ridiculous, he may be waiting it out- but all I've read indicates that he has no interest in buying them, so we shall see.

I always liked the Islanders, and if any fan base deserved a new owner it's theirs. Wang can suck a wang,IMO.

7 year rule? how did the jets move back?
- Drij

yup... I'm calling BS on that one as well...

Bettman will sell to anyone with the money and a semblance of a plan. The seven year this is just noise to keep the Islander fan base quiet.

Very similar to all the good news and optimism that was spread around when the Whalers left Hartford.

Brooklyn could provide a good market. Many die-hards will still make the trek as well.

Brooklyn is the BEST market other than possibly Toronto (best hockey market that is also the largest)- and they already have a 25 year lease and a $25+ M per year TV contract to play in Brooklyn....by the way...note that TV contract and the fact that they lose money to the tune of right around $12M a year (anything you read in a publication that says it's a lot more than that is BS...like THN, for example...just saying....if anything, since they restructured the lease, it's probably a little less).....that explains what an absolute piece of sh*t that building in Uniondale is, and the embarrassment that is their lease in that dump. At any rate, once that team gets to Brooklyn, I can think of five franchises right off the top of my head that would be better off moving to Toronto than them, including one of their neighbors. Note I didn't say SHOULD move, before anyone gets upset- I'm just talking about being in a worse situation than the Isles will be in, after that happens.

Jay-Z has open pockets, but is not allowed to own a sports franchise anymore since he started his own sports agency.... Nice try tho......

I'd rather they move to Quebec then have Jay-Z buy them.

Interesting tidbit in yesterdays Newsday article that Wang took back the Islanders business operations from Ratners group a couple of months ago. That seems like that kind of consolidation is something that a potential buyer would want.
