I've considered making a new username, but I don't have the heart to break up with this one. |

This might come across as an ignorant question, but is it safe for Americans there? - PLindbergh31
As safe as Berlin or Singapore or Rio... it's one of the great cities of the world. |

It's not ignorant at all. Unfortunately it's a very valid question. I can't answer, but I will say I met quite a few "Canadians" that after a few beer weren't actually Canadians.
And it wasn't because they fell off their stool. |

When I think Turkey, I think Middle East.... It is part of Europe though. I have heard it's a fun place to visit. |

All kidding aside, Instabul is supposedly pretty freakin fun. The average person is under 30, the economy is booming, the food is great, and there are a ton of clubs and bars. - Tomahawk

I was in Antalya too, which is more of a resort city but it really is a great country. I enjoy culture shock though, it's not for everyone. Just don't hop in a car and go too far east. Actually, probably best to avoid cars all together.
I will say this though, if people dropping in the street to pray at the sound of a bell 10 times a day freaks you out you might want to avoid that part of the world. |

Yes. It's hard to beat relativity for relevance. The IMF still considers it an emerging market economy, but the U.S. considers it a developed nation. So growing industrialized country. About 17% of the population lives below the poverty line, compared with about 15% for the United States.
It is having political growing pains. But I have a friend who was there late last year for a vacation and they loved it. Of course, they are Russian and there are a lot of Russian speaking vendors/businesses there because of its proximity to Russia, so they had an easy time navigating the culture. But I think there are quite a few English speaking vendors/businesses as well because of lots of British tourism. |
