Yes, it can be explained very easily. Here is how it is summed up:

In general, a team that has more possession time and more shots will be more successful than a team with lower possession time and fewer shots, all things being equal. Of course, let's forget the logic of that statement and instead come up with some crazy amount of number crunching to prove it and show how terrible defensively-minded players are.

- jmatchett383

Thats why I don't think its the greatest measurable of individual players. Carle does not equal Suter and MacDonald is, clearly, not one of the worst defenseman in hockey.

I've also heard that goalies who stop a greater percentage of shots on goal generally have more wins than goalies who stop fewer...but unless I see stats to prove it, I'm chalking that one up to a myth.

Yes, but I also think that Fenwick and Corsi are useless if a team has a low Shooting %.

How does throwing a lot of low percentage shots at the net constitute possession? I think every stat needs a second stat to really quantify it.

The one saving grace is that no team can win every game.

Even with as much of a dogfight as it is between the Rangers, Flyers, Capitals and Jackets, they would have to be the best teams in hockey to win all of their remaining games.

The Wings and Leafs are also really close.

Loses will come here and there, no team except maybe the Bruins can win all of their remaining games.

Amen brother! The recent game against St. Louis proves that.

Advanced stats such as Corsi and Fenwick do a much better job then traditional +/- does. But it still is badly flawed in it's concept. And it has some of the same flaws as +/-

Bruins laugh at stats... Lucic runs them over like they were Ryan Miller, then Chara slaps them with his stick like they were... Ryan Miller?

Actually in my generation most of us made it to about 15 before we started smoking weed

Now the kids of today might actually be smoking at 10. This one manager at the mcdonalds near me is like 18 and has 3 kids. His first kid, he was 11. poop is nuts.

Almost makes me wish journalists had the balls to ask questions to a scumbag like neal.

Instead they just fluff his junk and bow down to his "status" as an athlete.

I think it becomes flawed if a team is intentionally just throwing shots on net every chance they get without really generating a legitimate chance. I just don't think teams are doing that though.

+/- is still a very good stat if you know how to read it. If you factor in QoC and zone start %. Couturier being pretty much even makes his +/- amazing. Lecavalier getting sheltered minutes makes his +/- all that much worse.

I started smoking weed at 14. I think high school is usually the starting point unless you have an older sibling who gets you going earlier.

Not flawed exactly, but there are teams who do throw puck at the net from an odd angle when they have been pushed to the perimeter for too long. Or teams that take a shot from the far point when they can't get the puck down low.

It was a good lesson for them. They played 20 minutes and still almost beat a pretty good team.

Hopefully they learn the right lesson, and that is they can beat anyone if they compete for the majority of every period. Sure there will be letdowns, that is the nature of the game. Just don't let them be for entire periods.

The bad lesson would be the 'flip the switch' mentality they seemed to have under Lavy.
