Would you rather have Bergeron or Ovechkin?
- PhillySportsGuy

Bergeron had better be able to directly stop at least 30-40 goals against because that's what it's going to take to make up the difference in output.

I'd take Ovechkin over everyone except a handful of guys

Fair enough -- I overstated by saying people said he was a "bad player." My overstatement.

I don't know how to equate everyone's definition of better -- I can only gauge the Caps off what I see. I see them infrequently, but they rely on the PP when I do.

Could they do it differently? Maybe. But I don't know that. I don't follow them closely enough to know whether Ovechkin sacrificing offense for defense would have them winning more games. If I watched them more often, I'd probably have a better feel.

- AllInForFlyers

Well, we've had this discussion before. I think playing defense will lead to more and better offensive opportunities. So I don't think there is any sacrifice of offense involved, in playing better away from the puck.

He has 18 less points. I won't even get into his match ups, defensive zone starts, PK ability and face-off percentage. I guess I kind of did get into it.

Ill take my chances against him at ES. He seems to be on the ice for a lot of goals against.
- PhillySportsGuy

Good point. But he still scares the bejeesuz out of me when he has the puck.

These Player A vs. Ovechkin arguments need context. What is the makeup of the rest of the team? On a team full of Bergerons, an Ovechkin is more of a need.

Good point. But I think you win more with a Bergeron then an Ovechkin.

Depends on style of play, and the other guys I'd have on the roster.

But if those were the two best players available in a draft, I'd pick Ovechkin -- for the simple fact that, as has been noted, you can't win a game 0-0.

You are picking a team and the best two players left are Bergeron and Ovechkin. Your only other player is Jay Rosehill.

You just can't have a liability of that magnitude that takes up 15% of your cap space.

No, not being sarcastic.

Bergeron sees a steady diet of the other team's top forwards, OV sees a steady diet of the other team's top D. Neither situation is easy to score under. Bergeron could get the same usage as OV and not even come close to scoring the same amount of goals... OV's just a machine.

Btw, why do OV and Kessel get all the heat, but Stamkos gets a pass? He's similarly weak defensively.
