Some big concepts are getting seriously butchered here today.

That's the point. That's always been the point.

It's all math. It's all the same -- some of the the math takes a little longer to compute. That's all.

Those who find ways to interpret that math -- whatever math you are using -- and apply it will find whatever level of satisfaction they need.

In stating this, you're making my point about analytics.

He's from Philly. He's a Phillies fan. Can't stand most Flyers fans. But most (or a lot, whatever) Phillies fans are Flyers fans. That's the part that confuses the hell out of me. But meh...he's still a good guy, all except for that lawyer thing...

Think his ears were just melting off his head today?

I really don't like the fans who pick and choose teams like that. Maybe I'm biased because my bil is from hatboro but arbitrarily decided to be a pens fan, and he's a douce.

Detroit-Columbus, StL-Toronto, LA-Washington tonight...what a set of interesting games tonight.

LA's game is usually pretty portable, because it's not very fancy....but still, wonder if they've got enough left in the tank to take the Caps, who are pretty damn hot right now

(Toronto's interesting because if they lose in regulation tonight, all hell is going to break loose)

Nice article by Yost on how teams have been improving, or not, in the stretch run... thought you'd be interested:

I caught him over on the Pens thread. I do hope he hasn't fled forever, despite the recent objections sustained.

According to that, the Flyers aren't improving, but are trending down. But yet they were just on a 6 game winning streak, have beaten the top team in the League, the Blues 4-1. And are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. The word suspect comes to mind.

It shouldn't, if you don't parse the numbers just for the final outcome -- for instance, I said the Capitals have been hot lately.

But according to those possession numbers...maybe not so much. But the Caps have been winning. So what gives?

Again: Stats are a snapshot. Sometimes a predictor. The Caps win many games because, as we all know, their power play is lethal.

But we also know this: PPs run hot and cold.

So, here's what I'm interpreting: The Caps are a team that could be in serious, serious trouble if that PP stops working. Because they don't possess the puck a lot, drive the play, at even strength.

Again: That's interpreting the data. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Because I don't watch the Caps every night. I just used the data as a snapshot.

Not a catch-all that says the Caps are going to miss the playoffs, or win the Stanley Cup. Just a snapshot, with a predictive outcome.

Again: No more. No less.

Its the last 25 games and it doesn't take strength of schedule into consideration.

I know it's the last 25 games. Then look at the record in the last 25 games. 15-7-3. Still not trending down. That's the problem with those kinds of articles that look at possession numbers, and only possession numbers. Doesn't come close to telling the full story.

It's only a study of ES possession as well... and the Flyers are basically holding steady. If you know your team is riding improved PP, PK and goaltending to wins, what's there to get worked up over, right?

The Caps are 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. That's not that hot. And how many PP goals have they scored lately?

Are you serious?

The Caps are 4-0-1 in their last five, with the loss a 2-1 defeat in a shootout.

Yes, they are 5-4-1 in their last 10. Again: A snapshot.

4-0-1...also a snapshot. Which in that case, means "hot."

You must have. The language used in the article clearly points out that the author feels that the stats he provides are definitive and tell the whole story. Not to mention that the article doesn't contain anything other then possession stats.

I'm a big fan of Travis Yost. He wrote some great stuff during the lockout. But he drastically over relies on statistical data in my opinion. And that's one of the problems I have with some of the advanced stats disciples.
