In my experience, the union negotiates a contract and perhaps gets you more money (though not really in my case), but I have yet to see a union actually "help" anybody with anything else. The company I am with now until April 1st anyhow is unionized.

Any time my wife has gone to the union about anything their response has always been "sorry nothing we can do to help you there"

I fail to see any bang for our buck in paying union dues for no service, and besides, the unions and the companies are all in bed with one another and anybody who doesn't realize that is just fooling themselves.

In Quebec they're really useful at allowing incompetents to keep their jobs.

No, but all Unions have mechanisms in place that make it virtually impossible to fire anybody, regardless of how incompetent they are.

I used to work in an place where they manufacturing aerospace components.

shop folks were union, office staff weren't.

during negotiations they would leave boxes of poop all over the place so you couldn't get to the water fountains or bathroom doors.

if you moved a box out of the way, one of them would pop out and file a grievance saying non-union staff was moving boxes.

I always thought it was ironic that they'd complain when it was shown that someone else could do their job(s), when they're likely negotiating on the premise that ONLY they can do their job(s). Seems it would make more sense to shut the (frank) up about that stuff.

I worked at a telecom company that had unionized techs. If I wanted to reserve a 1-800 number for a client, I couldn't just go into the database and reserve it. I had to call a unionized technician, tell him the number I wanted to reserve, fill out a form, email it to him, and then HE would go into the database and reserve it. Money. Well. Spent.

I couldn't plug my mouse in a different USB port while working at TVA. Needed to contact IT for that serious operation.

I get why unions first came to light, in the 20's and 30's when people were dying by the dozens making things like the empire state building and hover dam but do you really need a union to deliver mail?
