What I've learned from the Ottawa situation is that you have to be real careful about trading goaltenders. You can go from thinking you have a wealth of talent in net, to "oh, oh, we traded the wrong guy." Bishop looks like a stud in Tampa. The Flyers traded Bob, because they decided to go a different direction in net. I am just saying, be careful when you trade young goaltenders.

And, you are absolutely right about Hank. He may not be the best goaltender in any given year (although he is always in the Top 3-5), but over the course of the last several years, he has been the best, IMO.

By the way, Richter said essentially the same thing. Someone needs to run Richter for political office, because he can talk an owl out of a tree.

He went to Yale Law School after he retired. I am going to run into him someday bc he spends a lot of time in New Haven at the various luncheonettes. When I do I'm going to give him a big bear hug!

speaking of Richter, whom I love as much as one dude can another dude...

the whole debate of whether Lundqvist's wins record for the NYR being unfair to Mike because he didn't have shootouts is a valid one.... however

almost 100 of Richter's wins came after 1998 and the Rangers missed the playoffs every single one of those years. How important were any of those wins for Richter during those years if we never made the playoffs?

Lundqvist has missed the playoffs only once in 9 years and they should have made it that year too, most of those years he took the team squarely on his back and carried them there.

He actually didn't go to Yale Law. He got admitted to Yale through some highly competetive non-traditional student program, and I think studied environmental issues while he was there. He has made environmental issues his cause celebre since retiring, and he is a smart as hell. When you see him, tell him that Pete V wants to run him for Congress, and that I will be his campaign manager.

I look at the comparison of the two goaltenders much in the same way I look at the difference between Nik Lidstrom and Brian Leetch. At Leetch's best, he put together years that were arguably better than any individual year that Lidstrom ever had. But, Lidstrom did it for years, and years, and years, and was simply better over the course of his career. That is why he is the best defensemen I've personally have ever seen.

I think the same is kind of true of Richter and Lundqvist. Richter had period of time where he was just unconscious in net, and it could be argued that his best, was better than Lundqvist's best (although that is certaintly debateable). But, Lundqvist, IMO, has been better and more consistent long term. He will be a Hall of Famer and Richter won't be, because of that.

But, I share your disclaimer. Mike Richter is one of my favorite players ever.

This may have been discussed earlier, but who am I supposed to root for in this Blue Jackets/Red Wings game tonight (other than no OT, of course)?

This was discussed, and the general consensus was the Detroit is a better team than Columbus even without Datsyuk or Zetterberg but they're not in our division so I'm personally gonna be rooting for them.

I think Detroit.

The goal should be to beat out Columbus and Washington for one of the other two division playoff spots, not the wild card

however, whatever happens, don't want a 3 point game either way

Yeah, that is probably right. I hope that LA has something left for the Capitals tonight. The Caps took 5 out of 6 points going through that California gauntlet, so they are a team to watch right now.

I posed that earlier and several folks have given good reasons on both sides. I think the best path in is via top 3 finish in the division so go Detroit but in regulation.

The last 3 games have been reminiscent of that team. Especially the game in Columbus, it seemed thenastier the game got the better the Rangers got. 8 goals in the third period in the last 3 games. Clutch lately too

Wonder if Quick gets back to back starts. They are fairly comfortable out West.

Crazy stat of the day: The Blues and Leafs have the same save percentage (.916) but the Leafs have allowed 800 more shots against.

They are locked into the 3 seed. They are not catching either Anaheim or San Jose, and no one is catching them for the 3 seed, so alot of not so important hockey for the Kings to play until the finish of the season.

Exactly. I'm not sure its worth playing Jonathan Quick tonight after having played last night. Sucks for us but they've earned the right and luxury of resting their stud goaltender

Not sure if anyone mentioned this cuz this thread is so long lol. I find it funny how no analysts or reports even mentioned Hagelin's name in last nights game. It was Hag's gritty boardwork and great passing that found McDonagh and Girardi on the points that led to each goal that tied and won the game for us. Not to mention his shot that Richards deflected which gave the team legs and a will to start battling. Can't believe how overlooked he was, I thought he deserved 2nd Star for basically creating the plays that led to 3 key goals.

definitely agree

he is another one too just looking at next year. He can do so much and his cap hit at 2.25 million is gonna be huge for us with how tight things will be cap wise next year.

People shouldn't be so quick to throw his name in trade rumors trying to get the next superstar in here.

I agree, I think Hagelin got a little lost in the big names this year being kinda overlooked. He is probably our best boardwork player. I don't know another Ranger that consistently drives into the boards getting to the puck first and shifts back and forth and comes off the boards with the puck. He does it every shift really. He's not a single dominant player but is a vital piece to complete any line.
