It's interesting there -- Umberger's cap hit is something like $4.5 per year, and Columbus, I guess, doesn't have the cash flow to keep a player who is paid that who isn't producing at that level
I definitely got the impression that they'd feel better about him if he was making $1.5 - AllInForFlyers
I guess. Flyers live in a world where money doesn't matter unless its preventing them from spending more of it. |

I give them credit for it, because they deserve it.
But they're gonna eat Richards' contract. That's just gonna happen, if not now, then soon - AllInForFlyers
Yup, either they eat it, or they keep a piece of it and move him. Either way it's going to be painful for the Kings. |

Pretty much. If there was no cap, there is no doubt in my mind that the Flyers, Leafs, Red Wings and Rangers would all have payrolls at or near $100 million by now. The Ed Snider-Comcast combo is pretty much a bottomless pit when it comes to cash. |

Yeah, I think if Columbus is willing to eat 20-30% of the contract and cap hit, they will have no problem dealing Umberger. He can still be a very effective 3rd line player who can chip in 20 goals and 40 points and help out on special teams. - BiggE
And to be fair, while Ryan Johansen is having a breakout season, the centers on Columbus are not exactly point-producing machines, assist machines.
Maybe if somebody buys low on Umberger, they get something out of him...he's still a big body

He has 18 goals this year, good for 3rd on CBJ, so I'm not too ready to write RJ's hockey obit just yet.
Mike Richards' decline, to me, is a bit galling. I would not have foreseen this. |

Well, he's not real fast, kind of small and has had a lot of injuries. Plus bangin playboy bunnies and C list starlets must be very draining!

Big Bennifer guy? - PhillySportsGuy
Nah, I like Kevin Smith's movies and I liked what he tried to do with that movie.
If it wasn't for that Bennifer thing (and SPOILERS, she was only in the movie for 10 minutes), I think the movie would be better thought of.
Watching that movie now, divorced from that whole tabloid mess, and the flick really isn't bad at all. |

I can't even fathom keeping a piece of his contract -- not because he's done anything wrong, but...I don't stalk the guy, but I see bits and pieces of him from time to time, and it's bad.
He's 29 years old. He has nine goals in 70 games. He certainly still plays tough and still has hockey sense, defensive awareness, so he's not killing you when he's on the ice...but his stride is like an old man's.
He's why I'm terrified of signing a guy like Ryan Callahan. Callahan's a better skater, but OMG. When those guys go...there's no turning back.

Does LA have buyouts? I feel like he's certainly a candidate. He's got...if I remember correctly...37 years left on his deal?
No but really it's probably still like 11 years right?? |

Best time of year all!
It feels like yesterday that Briere went in on Henrik in that shootout.
Im enjoying the ride and glad to see L Schenn fulfilling some of that top 5 potential, i still forget how young he is.
I really feel that Coutourier will be DOMINANT in this league, and he is being underutilized in his role, he is absolutely top 6 material; shutdown center or not. |

You know this isnt a bad point. LA might use the buyout.... Richards might be back next year... Playing with Couturier and Read.
PK..
Richards-Giroux (best offensive PK ever)
Read-Couturier

I think they might...not everybody used both of theirs.
They might not pull the trigger that quickly, but...maybe they should, because IIRC, this is the last offseason where you can do it without counting against your cap.

I never say never, but I feel pretty comfortable saying that if Mike Richards is bought out, there are two franchises he won't be playing for next season: Los Angeles and Philadelphia.

Richards was never going to age well, because of his skating, but even I wouldn't have guessed it would be this fast and this dramatic - AllInForFlyers
I think Mike Richards downfall is being exaggerated. He's still a good playmaker, and a solid all around player. His goal scoring is down.

I don't even know where he'd fit on this team, even if you did want to entertain the notion.
