Down year, he's young and it's why I think he'd come at a reasonable price. We all loved Torres for a reason while everyone else hated him. Downie's still relatively young as well. Look at Downie's career averages(goals, points, hits per 82 games). Very valuable player under the right coach.

The NHL backed off a bit on NJ this year . I guess they know what they are doing is illegal. Someone will challenge that rule in court seeing those contracts were agreed upon and deemed legal in good faith under the old CBA.

I think that had more to do with Kovalchuk screwing NJ and playing in the KHL than NJ's cap circumvention. Why punish a team that got left in the lurch and the player deciding to unretire to play in another league.

They've already been punished though. The fact the NHL eased off the full punishment is a different story.

In the end of the day rules like cap circumvention usually get grandfathered in and rarely get applied retroactively. But the new CBA was signed by both the NHL and NHLPA. I haven't read the clause but if it is to be applied to all existing and future contracts (which is my understanding) then there's little legal footing any owner would have in court when his signature is on the document. The only opening for successful litigation that I could imagine is if the wording was ambiguous in any way.
