The Flyers were in absolute cap hell that season. It would have been better to trade Upshall for a pick than to trade him and a pick for Carcillo.
- Jsaquella

Yeah, they needlessly lost Metro and Vaananen on waivers during that stretch, too. Cap management and planning are not Homer strengths, for sure.

Ovi is awesome, love watching him.

I would take pre-broken leg Stamkos over him though.

That was the one season that he really, really bungled the cap. They had to win late season games and had kids on PTO's signed and playing defense for a game apiece down the stretch.

Haha yeah, Sloane and Fritsch.... neither guy was even AHL-caliber. Sloane's already retired and Fritsch is plying his trade in Italy.

Yeah, I couldn't even remember the names. Is that the same season they lost Jones on recall waivers?

EDIT: nope, lost Jones the next season

Ovechkin is the best goal scorer in the NHL and won the MVP last season. Not sure why my opinion of Ovechkin over Crosby seemed so crazy. I've been watching them closely since they came in the NHL and that's my opinion. Ovechkin is awesome and got MVP last year. I think his game is better than Crosby's.
- TonyBazz

But...I mean you said earlier that you take G over Crosby because his overall game is better....

And if you look up one-dimensional in the dictionary, you actually see the definition of one-dimensional.

Next to the definition is one of those sketch pictures though, and it's of Ovechkin.

You rip Crosby for being a on way player and then celebrate Ovechkin?

Ovechkin literally does one thing-scores goals. He doesn't play defense, he doesn't elevate teammates(the way Crosby has with Kunitz and Dupuis), he and his team have badly underachieved in the playoffs several times and he doesn't work half as hard as Crosby does to make himself better.

I think you just have a hatred for Crosby.

- Jsaquella

Ovechkin is built like a NFL linebacker and brings an imposing physical presence that few forwards do. Where in the world do you get off saying Crosby plays harder and with more effort than Crosby?!? Have you seen Ovechkin play before? Have you seen the effort on some of his goals? Some of the biggest hits we see on the highlight reels are from him too. He's a bull. We see Crosby back away from physical play constantly. He doesn't make players around him better? Are you serious? How many of Backstrom's assists are on Ovechkin's goals? Get real. He doesn't have the cast Crosby does either. Joel Ward and Brooks Liach play in the top six in Washington and their goaltending has been well below average. Their defensemen don't exactly make up for the poor goaltending there either. Ovechkin was MVP last year because they wouldn't be anything without him. He is the Capitals.

Yeah, it was the following season... still can't believe Randy Jones was making almost $3M/year in the NHL.

Sorry to change the subject, but who would you rather see the Flyers give 4-6 million to? Mike Green from the Capitals or Matt Niskanen from the Pens? Or neither?

It's between Niskanen and "neither" for me. I haven't decided yet.

His whole deal was $3mm, salary was $1.15mm...still, pretty pricey at the time for a 3rd pair guy

At even money, I'm taking Mike Green, mainly because he's an elite point-producer/PP QB in addition to being a fantastic puck-mover.

I don't think Niskanen's production from year-to-year will be anywhere close to Greens moving forward.

I think both guys get lambasted for their D, but I really don't think it's deserved, especially in Green's case. He's actually not terrible... better than John Carlson.

I'd prefer Green, too, because Niskanen has basically done it one time. Hard to justify such a large contract to a guy that's really had one year where he was handling a top pair role

How dare you say OV doesn't play hard, who cares what reality shows with his -31 this year.
