Do you really see someone offering a similar package to what it would take to land Weber though?

I'd be looking for multiple 1st round picks, and 2 top level prospects... I don't see anyone doing that.

- jtommyt

Same package as Weber? No.

I also don't think that package lands Weber. I think Weber is untouchable unless he chooses to move.

This is how I see it. Someone write this down somewhere and tell me how awesome I am when it comes true!

Sean Monahan (2nd line), Sven Baertschi (3rd line), Ben Hanowski (4rth line), Max Reinhart (HEAT), Chad Billins (Gonzo), Corban Knight (4rth line), Tyler Wotherspoon (3rd Pairing), Joni Ortio (Starter), Johnny Gaudreau (HEAT), Granlund (3rd line/HEAT)

The freed cap space are taken up by Kessel's and Phaneufs extensions. The cap going up might cover the rfa resignings......might have some room to play with.

Serious question though, do Phaneuf and Giordano get along? and did they work well together?

- mykokes

Honestly, I feel like Phaneuf doesnt even get along with Phaneuf. He argues with himself in the mirror, hence this look.

Are we basing these packages on what Pronger went for? Because that's what I'd expect to see in a Weber trade.

Yep...callup basis is all I can see for next year.
- Colin Dambrauskas

And that's is really only because of Stajan's value in providing that veteran leadership that the kids will need.

Barring nay trades of prospects or new centers coming in (through trade, FA or draft) I think that Granlund's future as a center on this team looks very good. In a few years I see that center group being Monahan, Backlund, Granlund, and Knight. With the right players around them on the wings I think that is a very good group of centers. In the least it is much better then what this team has had in the last number of years.

Actually, there's been conversation on the Leaf threads of Gardiner plus our 2014 1st for starters----the problem we have is our gm paid too much money to Clarkson so we got no cap to work with.

We do know how good Giordano is dude.

- mykokes

Ok, then I guess the issue is some of you Leaf fans think Burke is either desperate or dumb.

How about this. I make a blog tomorrow which will poll where most feel the number of "questionable" players like the above, will end.

Yeah, probably. I'm actually frightened of any deal that involves Burke and Nonis. The Teacher taking the student to the cleaners so to speak.

Im not sure my head is on straight enough to try and put that together right now, given what can happen from now till next preseason
- Colin Dambrauskas

We just have way too many players...

Left wings - Cammy, Hudler, Glencross, Baertschi, Galliardi, Klimchuk, Poirier
Centers - Backlund, Monahan, Stajan, Colborne, Granlund, Knight, Bouma, Reinheart, Byron
Right Wing - Jones, McGrattan, Westgarth, Hanowski

Even if you move Colborne, Bouma, and Knight to the right side, there's too many bodies.

I find it interesting that Leafs fans still value Gardiner as highly as they seem to. I think the kid could be good but to be a major cog in a trade for Gio is banking on his previously believed potential, not the way he is panning out.

I guess it depends what you consider "starters" because Gardiner and the 2014 1st (~20th as it stands) is not going to get it close.

Truth is, the cost is closer to Reilly, 2014 1st (or 2015 if you guys wanted the 14 more for some weird reason) and 2nd or Leivo.

I'm not saying Tdot should pay that but it's going to make things interesting, Gardiner... not so much.

Don't get me wrong. I completely agree... I'm just saying the kind of package that a GM would put together to even try to get a conversation started for an elite D-man.

Has a d-man ever gone for that type of package before? Reilly, 2014 1st (or 2015 if you guys wanted the 14 more for some weird reason) and 2nd or Leivo. One who has never been a 1st team or 2nd team NHL all star?

June 26, 2009 – Traded to the Philadelphia Flyers along with Ryan Dingle for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, and Philadelphia's 1st round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft (Traded to Columbus, John Moore) and the 2010 NHL Entry Draft (Emerson Etem), and a conditional pick for either the 2010 NHL Entry Draft or the 2011 NHL Entry Draft (conditions did not transpire).

July 3, 2006 – Traded to the Anaheim Ducks for Joffrey Lupul, Ladislav Šmíd, 1st round pick in 2007 (Riley Nash), a 2008 2nd round picks (traded to New York Islanders, Travis Hamonic) and a conditional 1st round pick for one of the 2008/2009/2010 drafts (conditions were met in 2008, Jordan Eberle).

In short, yes. Those are both Pronger trades by the way (not saying Gio is Pronger) but I'd say both those deals are much bigger than the Reilly + deal I mentioned.

In short, yes.

In Pronger you're talking a Hart Trophy and Norris winner. Giordano is good, but he's not in that class, knock the asking price down a bit.

Well there we go, first off you edited the bolded part after... 2nd of all, you don't understand Gio's value if you are trying to use lack of an All-star appearance as critieria.

He's a top pairing d-man, and probably top 15 in the NHL right now, and yea, sorry for doing that, tried to get it done before you responded. And I'm being serious, is there a comparable trade to get an idea from. I'm not here to poke holes in your idea, I just don't think Pronger is the comparable to base a trade off of. Fair?

Put bluntly, no. The flames will not trade him for less. If you read my posts, I never said he was Pronger, nor did I say the Leafs should or would make this deal. Just letting you know that these discussions of "gardiner and a 1st" are so far off the mark that Burke would laugh and hang up.

Totally fair, I was more looking at a guaranteed D man trade that would be higher value. Comparable, not sure of the top of my head.

No, Phaneuf's contract was terrible and he wasn't the go to guy when we got him. Giordano had already supplanted him then.
