This story gives all the obvious indications that Gillis was most likely the second gunman on the grassy knoll. Think about it. |

They believed they were. But in the end I hear MG could not get that approval - Eklund
Again....you better get another source.....
Elliot Friedman - 2. Canuck rumour II: That ownership blocked Gillis from trading Ryan Kesler at the deadline. Verdict: Don't believe it. As mentioned above, Aquilini was well aware of the GM's plans. It would not be the least bit surprising if an interested team or two told Vancouver it could be involved at the draft, but not now, for cap reasons. Also, when Kesler said no to Columbus, the Rangers and Philadelphia, the Canucks may have pulled back because they didn't like the situation. |

Anyone who remembers when the Flyers signed Kessler to the offer sheet should know that Umberger and Kessler had "issues" whatever they were. RJ was thrilled that Kessler did not come to Philadelphia in the press.
I think that once again the player going public, or letting it leak to the public, hurt the team's ability to get value and I think (imho) that it was a calculated way of paying the Canucks back for some kind of perceived injustice. Same with Nash, same with many players who have done the same thing over the years.
Everyone knows that once a player goes public wanting out the price drops |

So much of this goes against what Elliot Freidman says in his 30 thoughts today.

I will believe his version far before this speculation of yours. - Iggysbff
Thanks for the link. I don't totally believe Freidman's statement that the owners didn't veto the Kesler deal to Anaheim because something happened at the very last minute. Maybe Gillis did get cold feet and decided that the offers would be better at the draft. I guess it doesn't matter now.
Anaheim was REALLY into this and had the best offer out of any team and they merit one sentence in your tell-all about Kesler. |

Suddenly many in the Canadian media were taking what I considered to be potshots at Ryan Kesler's character. Suddenly it was reported that Kesler would only play for an American team. To me, this seemed ridiculous given the man's own son was born in Canada and given his captaincy with a Canadian team for years. I asked quite a few people if they thought this was true. - Eklund

And then came the Penguins. The Penguins really wanted Ryan Kesler. The problem was the Penguins didn't have one of the big requirements needed by Mike Gillis. Actually demanded by Mike Gillis. The Penguins didn't have the topline center that they could give away. Sutter wasn't enough. And because of this the penguins were sort of out of this relatively early. Talking to people now they were out even before trade deadline day. We in the media of course didn't get that message because the Canucks wanted people to believe the penguins were still in it because that would draw the Flyers and the Rangers into it.
Actually, the Canucks demanded Maatta. The Penguins wouldn't move him. |

A true rebuild in Vancouver is start when the twins and their $14 million in cap space are traded.
So in other words.....never!
Retooling is hard. Burke proved that in Toronto. No matter how much you trade to get in return there will always be a hole. For the Leafs it is the defence. |

Burkey is probably working on a deal right now to bring the Sedins to Calgary. |
