Why is megna in the ahl, while guys like pyatt and kobesew remain on the roster?
- Brianandr1

To give him time to feel comfortable on LW before being thrown to the wolves. The Penguins divisional lead affords them that opportunity.

There is no doubt Megna is a better option but big picture more important than small short term gains right now

If I am not mistaken, Kobasew was sent down when we got Goc and Stempniak. And it is only a matter of time for Pyatt. Hopefully Ryan is right about Megna getting some time at left wing down in WBS. I would rather him get that time up here, but the Pens need to be sure what they have and what they can and can't do moves wise.

He hasn't looked out of place either. Hopefully he's here for a long playoff run. He could make himself some money in Free Agency as well.

I've seen you post this before, so I went back and looked at game summaries... 5 on 5 with Kunitz, Crosby and Gibbons on the ice together, the Pens have scored 7 goals and given up 6. Putting an AHLer on the Crosby/Kunitz line doesn't really result in a positive line, it basically neuters your best offensive line, for the sake of slightly improving your 3rd line.
- rival22

That's still a net positive.

And you're ignoring the rest of the point that I'm making.

Look at the numbers on the 3rd line when you add 2 actual NHL players to the line vs when Sutter is being his ho-hum self while trying to anchor 2 guys that shouldn't be in the league. I guarantee there's a huge gain.

Then look at the increase when Sid/Kuni have an NHL winger.

Then do the math on the overall goals for/against and I will lay money that it increases when the 3rd line isn't giving up goals because it's completely atrocious. Because at the moment, we don't have the luxury of doing both. So figure out which one yields the best goals for/against and go with it. I'll bet it's the one that doesn't have a bunch of goals given up for the 3rd line.

*EDIT* - in no way do I think that Gibbons should even be in the league, much less lining up to the right of the best player on the planet, but I think that given the options here, the best thing for the team in the short term until injured players return, is to rectify the sieve that is the 3rd line. That line, as it had been constructed without 2 NHL-caliber wingers for sutter, is the greatest threat to the Pens ability to win at this point because of the number of goals it lets up.

I was just starting to type up something like that too... You gotta be careful with a month left in the season. I'm ok with letting Megna get comfortable on the left side in WBS for a little while longer.

But while looking up that rule, I found this:

(j) A Player may be Loaned to a club of any league affiliated with the League at any time up to 3:00 p.m. New York time of the fortieth (40th) day immediately preceding the final day of the Regular Season (the "Trade Deadline"). Following this period, no Player may be Loaned, except that:

(i) a Player who has been Recalled during such restricted period under Article 13.12(l), 13.12(m), or 13.12(n) may be Loaned back to the member club of the affiliated league from which they were Recalled;

(ii) a Player who is on the Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception, or who has been unfit for 24 calendar days and ten (10) NHL Regular Season games, may be Loaned on a Bona-Fide Long-Term Injury/Illness Exception Conditioning Loan (with the Player's consent) pursuant to Section 13.9 above for a period not to exceed the longer of six (6) days and three (3) games (which Loan is not subject to any extension), provided, however, if the Player is not on the Bona-Fide Long Term
Injury/Illness Exception, he cannot be Loaned while he is on Injured Reserve; and

(iii) a Player may be Loaned (with the Player's consent) provided such Player (a) was on Recall and was determined to be disabled as of the Trade Deadline, (b) is determined to be fit to play prior to such Loan, and (c) was on the Active Roster for less than twenty-five percent (25%) of the period from the beginning of the Regular Season up to and including the date on which he was determined to be disabled.

If I'm reading that right, Pyatt can't be sent down by the Pens at this point.

And when Bennett comes back, they are at the 23 man limit. For Megna to be recalled, someone will have to be sent down, and the only options are Despres or Gibbons (as they were re-assigned/re-called on the trade deadline day in a paper transaction).

He blasted somebody else too. He might be losing a step when it comes to his core responsibility, but he can still hit like a truck.

Really hope Martin gets back sooner not later. They really need him. The longer he's out the more I hate the Olympics.

I don't see how you can excuse Malkin for gaining the red line and then shooting it at a capital player then turning around and crawling to the bench. He owns the responsibility in that case to get his ass off the ice when he doesn't get it deep. It's a lazy play and Malkin is lazy at times.

@MolinariPG: Penguins RW Chris Conner out 4-6 weeks with broken left foot. Blocked shot in practice Sunday.

It's sad, but my first thought when I saw that last night was "Thank goodness, now Bylsma can't put him back in the lineup."

I said before that Stempniak's skills are close to what Dupuis brings, and so far, it looks like he can be a fit there. He doesn't seem as strong on the boards/forecheck as Dupuis, but he is a good skater, plays a straight line game, and shoots the puck.

Maatta keeps putting points up... He's now 7 points behind Krug for rookie scoring by defensemen, and Krug has 12 more power play points.

- rival22

Maatta has also been thrown into a much larger role because of injuries. Krug would never go against a teams top line
