He wasn't bad before the back injury. And there's a difference between being injured and not being able to play. Versus being able to play, but not being 100%. I'm open minded towards it working out. And I liked the deal from day one, and I still do. I guess we'll find out what happens.

For my own wild curiosity, has there ever been a deal by the Flyers you did not like? Or a criticism?

In the last 5 years lets say. Just for fun.

I was onboard with the Lecavalier signing, mainly because I had figured that the Flyers saw Brayden Schenn as a winger moving forward. I also get the rationale behind the signing, as Lecavalier theoretically was a nice safe bet if Schenn or Couturier failed to develop as hoped.

The trouble is, Schenn has played better at center this season and seems to be a lot more comfortable there than on the wing. Which means Lecavalier will have to adapt to the wing. He has struggled there.

He's also struggled with injuries. He's been dinged up in each of the last few seasons, missing time with assorted wear and tear injuries. If that trend continues, the 5 years will seem really long.

My bigger concern is that Lecavalier hasn't looked like a guy that fits in. He's been very inconsistent and has had games where he's been downright awful.

I'm not saying the signing was a bust yet, but I'm also far less enthusiastic than I was six or eight months ago.

Anyone is better than Patrick Chung.

Jenkins will give the team a legit starting safety. I still think they make another move for a safety.

Edit: Your scouting goes beyond hockey…

Too me it isn't so much as I like Schenn at wing, but I didn't know if Schenn was going to be a good enough center this year or into the future. And I didn't know if they were going to trade him for help elsewhere. And players like Vinny, while past the "great expectations" days are still few and far between.

Plus they thought last years team was a fluke, with injuries on defense, the short training camp, Bryz issues, ect ect ect They thought this team was still primed to win.

I just think the team was enamored with the shiny object. "Look! That guy has scored so many goals, been a top player, was selected first overall and is well known. We can't pass this chance up to get a player like that!"

See, I can see where your coming from. I would still feel as safe with Lecavalier's deal as I would with Hartnell's. Despite having a not so great year, I still believe he hold value, either on the team or as part of a trade.

Certainly there has been. No Organization is perfect. No GM is perfect. The biggest mistake Holmgren made this Season was not firing the Coach after last Season, when it was clear that the team couldn't play that way, and the Coach was unwilling to change. That undoubtedly cost the team some leeway in the standings. I initially did not like the Schenn/JVR trade. The Bryzgalov signing was an obvious mistake. Although I understand the rational behind it. And I'm sure there's plenty others in the past. There is no doubt that I'm optimistic and supportive of the team and the moves they make. Why wouldn't I be? It's the team I root for. I try to stay as objective as possible. Why would I want to look at the team through a pessimistic prism and criticize pretty much every thing they do, like an element of the fanbase does?

Call it a lack of optimism, but with that contract, point totals, and injury concerns, LeCavalier might as well have Malaria.

Doubt any team wants to touch that.

I don't feel safe with Hartnell's deal either. But I also know where Hartnell is going to play and roughly what I can expect from him, year to year.

Lecavalier is a declining superstar. He hasn't spent years in Philly building ties and Partly signed because he was looking forward to playing in an attack system like Laviolette's.

This is where I think things get off track. That is not how NHL teams approach things. When Lecavalier is bought out, and becomes available, and Holmgren has interest. I'm sure the first thing that is done, is he runs it by his staff and advisors. Like all NHL teams, the Flyers have an extensive pro scouting department, who actually watches NHL players play. The Flyers didn't sign Lecavalier like it was a fantasy draft, and they signed him based on his name only.

So NO is replacing Malcolm Jenkins with Jarius Byrd. TJ Ward to Denver. Almost all starting safeties are off the board. Mike Mitchell and Chris Clemons still out there though.

He is still on pace for 20 goals despite the injury. I think that is valuable.
