Can you imagine if we had a chance at making the playoffs with this defense?
- TommyDeVito

I was bummed with yesterday's loss, but if we can win tonight's matchup I think we can go on a run now that the players have the trade deadline behind them

TSN just posted another deal between us and Anaheim

To Ottawa: D Alex Grant
To Anaheim: F Andre Peterson

Grant was a 4th round pick in 2007 and has two goals in two NHL games.

Hemsky

Great skill. RW with speed (important). He's not going to come in and be a PPG player. He's good to bring scoring depth and a CHANCE to spark chemistry with 9/19 which are perfect fits. low risk/high reward (as someone said earlier)

Phillips

Great guy. Great 'A' captain. But role is restricted to third pairing with PK mins. I don't get how he fits in until 2016. 2/3/65/5 are top 4. Boroweici, Weircioch, Cleasson all likely to compete at training camp. One of these guys has to be traded

Tim Murray having a pretty rough first deadline:

Miller
Ott
Moulson
McNabb
Parker (nobody)
2nd Round Pick
2nd Round pick

For

Mitchell
Neuvirth
Stewart
Carrier (nobody)
Conditional 1st
Fasching (B level prospect)
Deslauriers (B level prospect)
TBA draft pick

Better hope that TBA is a first, at least.....Those two 2nd rounders will be high picks, too, with the way the sabres roster looks for the next year or two. Or three. Or forseeable future.

- TommyDeVito

They get St. Louis 2015 1st rounder guaranteed and a conditional 2014 first rounder. Still, not the greatest return... seems the market this year was soft.

Hemsky had 9G 17A in 55 games this season for the Oilers. Not bad #'s. Conacher had 4G 16A in 60 games this season. The guy did just turn 24 at the end of December.

I'd like to think Hemskys numbers would've been better playing the entire season in Ottawa. Hopefully he finishes the year strong here in Ottawa & likes playing here & wants to resign in the summer.

St. Louis is going to be a force in the playoffs. Very possible that pick canbecome another first

Michalek-Spezza-Hemsky

Scratches: Kassian, Greening

If they do role lines like that we would do pretty well up front

Defense is another story...

Fixed.

Imagine if Spezza was traded -- Zibanejad would look good between those Czechs

We'll trade for a couple of goons and make up for it with the toughest 4th line in the league...

Zibanejad would look good between any two wingers not named Greening, Kassian, or Neil.

Surprised NYR gave up that much, but it will be worth it for two years of MSL.

I don't mind the Hemmer deal but that Phillips contract pisses me off.

Id rather call up Claesson/Borocop and let them develop.

We play hardball against Alfie but cave for Chris Phillips

I give this squad a 1% chance of making the playoffs. Last night was the nail in the coffin IMO

Chances of making the playoffs are less than marginal. But, full credit to Murray, he did not do anything crazy. I was afraid he was going to overpay for a player like Moulson. The future is best served by developing and promoting the young guys in your own system.

Hemsky's stats this year don't tell the whole story. He's been forced into a role he isn't suited for since Eberle has developed and Yakupov was added and has been stuck bouncing up and down the lineup all season on a terrible team. He hasn't seen first line minutes in a long time now and has had his PP time limited from previous years.

Add all that to the fact he's spent a good portion of time playing in a 3rd line role (which is totally ridiculous for a player with his skill) stuck beside 2 grinders and you have the year Hemsky has had.

You guys have got a great player (don't let anyone tell you otherwise). The only real downside is his injury history, but since he had shoulder surgery he has held up quite well.

Pros:

-Some of the softest hands in the league. Can stick handle in a phone booth

-Has a deceptive wrister and an underrated scoring touch.

-Great play maker and can thread passes through traffic

-Has worked a solid back check into his game and doesn't get much credit for it in Edmonton. If the puck gets turned over he is usually the first forward back

-Goes to the tough areas of the ice to score or retrieve the puck. Used to be somewhat of a floater but has worked that out of his game

-Sound positional play in his own end. He supports the puck well in the defensive zone and is usually where he needs to be to help his defense move the puck out

-Has scored 70+ point seasons twice in his career and was a solid offensive producer before being bumped down the depth chart by edmonton's young "skill" players

-Excellent team mate

-Effective in the shootout

cons:

-Has a tendency to hold onto the puck too long in the offensive zone while looking for the perfect play

-Tendency to turn the puck over in transition through the neutral zone or across the offensive blue line due to attempts at dangling around the other teams D (Frustrating at times but amazing when he makes it work).

-Injury history

-Doesn't usually make the simple play (but has improved in this regard from early in his career)

-Often looks for the pass when he has a good scoring chance. Doesn't use his shot enough

-Can disappear for entire games or even stretches of games (tough to say if he just checked out here or what)

-Limited playoff experience (but was red hot when he was in the playoffs with the oil)

All in all, I'd be extremely happy if I were you guys. The big question for your team is if he will hold up until the end of the season and avoid any major injuries. If he does, I'm confident he will produce if he is on the 1st line. If he clicks with your team, they'd be crazy not to try to sign him at a reasonable cap hit.

While I don't feel it's anywhere close to the worst deal I've ever seen, I don't think buffalo would accept it.

Both dmen Ottawa is giving up are worse then what they're getting, and prince and a 1st aren't nearly enough to make up the difference

I'll be routing for Hemmer in OTT. Hope he gets an opportunity in the top 6.

While I do agree that OTT got the better end of the deal, it is pretty laughable that Hemsky is now a hot commodity/great player(someone here posted capable of 70P) in the eyes of OTT fans.

Is he playing tonight? If so who's he lined up to play with?

Wiercoch is pretty good. Cowen is bad. 2015 1st could be low 20s. How does that plus Prince equal two top pairing D?
