I think Sutter is getting an unfair rap around here. People want him to be Staal, which he can't be. Just not as big or strong. I actually think Sutter has a little bit better hands.

If Sutter got a couple of decent wingers for a change, I think people would change their opinions pretty quickly. Even last year, Kennedy and Cooke weren't very good. Kennedy and his whopping 4 goals this year is on his way to the unemployment line next year.

He makes 6.6 right now......don't see him taking a pay cut.

He's always been seen as overpaid. Start from there. Pay cut.

Sutter isn't Staal and I've said since the beggining it's unfair to compare the 2 however you can absolutely upgrade that position with Jordy or Kesler. Those 2 have the ability to carry a line and Sutter does not.

What the heck in Minnesota doing considering Brodeur? They realize that this is 2014, right?

Who here is comfortable with Sutter making 4M per season? Because that is the kind of cap hit he is looking at in his new deal.

I agree. I don't hate Sutter but i also wouldn't be confortable paying $4M to him.

The other question to pose then is: How did Staal do so much better with Cooke and TK?

Without running #'s, I would assume Sutter enjoys relatively the same # of offensive/defensive zone starts as Staal did so they are playing roughly the same role. If anything, I would think Sutter might be more protected in that regard since I would guess coaches had more faith in Staal's 3rd line.

understand that people think he is overpaid, but the fact is that a GM out there will pay 6.6-7+ for him. In his prime, 1st or 2nd line center.

Not me. And if you get a chance to add a talent like Kesler you do that. He's a known commodity vs picks and prospects who are unknown commodities.

Staal has been the most overrated player in the nhl for a long time, followed closely by Bouwmeester.

Sutter can't create to others much but is very responsible on D and can score shorties occasionally. Good 3rd line C, no question. A leader. Just NEEDS to gain 20 pounds..
- Orpik44

I'd say 30 lbs.

I have a very difficult time believing this. The only way the Canes cut salary is by removing Ward and Ruutu. My best guess is that Dreger let this slip as a favour to Shero or some other GM to potentially drive down the asking price for Kesler.

J.Staal has been just fine and would be even better if he weren't playing with 4th line talent.

no. i loved #11 when he was here but his complaints were that he wanted to play on a team with a brother and that he didnt want to be the 3rd line center. the reasons he left still exist. unless he has changed his mind?? Canes and Pens have been good trading partnes. Maybe they want that draft pick back that they gave up to get Staal??

maybe he wants to play on a team with another brother so its callahan for staal? NYR wants to pay Callahan $6M/yr so....

I say gaining weight is a step in the right direction, but also growing a set would be what he needs to do most of all.

I was hoping you would swoop in with some #s to back me up haha.

I also think the fact that coaching was willing to bump Staal up onto Geno's line when they needed more offense is telling in that they are very unwilling to do it with Sutter. He got under 3 games with Crosby when Dupuis went down before they resigned themselves to plugging retreads and AHLers in that role. If Staal was here, my guess is JJ or Neal bumps up to 87's line and Staal rotates into Geno's line during games when they need to shorten the bench and produce some offense.

Not an easy call. I would probably lean towards moving him just because of the conference the Avalanche would have to get through in the playoffs.

Avs are a really nice story this year but it is deep run probable? I don't know if I could confidently say that it is.

- Ryan_Wilson

I think they have to move him if they know they cant resign him. We wont match up well against the hawks if weo dnt have him, but I cant see us getting past them either regardless. Just nice to get back to the dance, only way we move on is if Varly steals us that series.

Move him, get the assets, and look at balancign out the roster in the offseason probably is the best and correct option

The way I read it, it's pure speculation. I think Carolina will have problems moving some of the other big salaries however. Staal is still an attractive player for some teams.

Just a little fun waiting for something to actually happen.

i dont think i have ever heard this much noise about one player that the pens want. you never hear this much activity about one player. is the kesler thing just a distraction? i thought the pens wanted boyes, fleishmann or stafford.

Add to it please. We need all your best prospects.

Pouliot, Despres, Bennett + 1st sounds about right.
