Paul Holmgren has told other NHL GMs tonight that he has no deal for Ryan Kesler and isn't likely to be making one.

I'll show myself out.

Actually saw a tweet asking seriously whether the Flyers would trade Schenn and Coots for Kesler. If I still smoked, I'd head down to Vancouver for whatever is available.

He allegedly said it's not likely. that's not a good sign. Homer's definition of likely may not mean what we think it does

Yes. “@Arjveer04: @SportsnetSpec Do you think philly would part with Couturier to get the Kesler deal done?”

I don't buy that, but if true then wow!

That's what he told Carter right before the trade to Columbus.

I think that's Holmgren trying to make Ray Shero give up more for Kesler than he really wants to.

Or even better, it might be Holmgren isn't really directly involved at all and it's really just Gillis playing on Pittsburgh's insecurity with respect to the prospect of losing out on a trade to Philadelphia.

Either way, I'd be pretty surprised is Holmgren trades for Kesler.

Yeah, I'd take Rundblad for a 2nd over AMac for a 2 and 3.
- Nucker101

Why? One is an established NHL defenseman, and the other is not.

You don't understand the hype of low risk/high reward then actually mention Gostisbehere....who hasn't even scratched his balls outside the NCAA? Just wait AT LEAST 5 years then you may see Ghost and his L handed version possibly battling for a spot like Gus, if he is lucky. Keep in mind the type of player he could be, St. Louis got Tarensenko, Ottawa got Turris and they had Karlsson and Phoenix (yes you may think they are a sucky team, but their defensive depth makes the Flyers look pathetic). Is he a guaranteed star? No, but he has good size, skating ability and passing...something a team specifically needs badly. Does he need to getter better in his own end, yes, but the same can be said about EVERY single current Flyer defenseman. These are the moves the Flyers need to make. I'm curious to see if plays much on the deep Chicago team this year.
- Glak18

The move the Flyers needed to make was to add an established NHL defenseman. Not add a question mark. I would've had no problem if the Flyers had taken a shot there. But Runblad has yet to establish himself as an NHL defenseman. And every single defenseman the Flyers currently have on the team, is a better player then Runblad.

I hope this is true. Even though Kesler is a very good player, the price seems too high.

Holmgren can still sign him to a huge five year deal when he's 32.

There is absolutely no reason why they couldnt have had both. Keep thinking that every flyers defensman is better. Same could have been said about coburn, Carl when they were younger...Do you not make those trades because they havent played in the NHL?

As I've said multiple times previously. I would've had no issue if the Flyers had taken a chance on Runblad. My issue is the criticism of Holmgren because he traded for McDonald over choosing Runblad. Which player better meets the immediate needs of the team? One player is an established NHL player, the other is a question mark.

In strictly terms of pure skill, yes. He's got a ton of physical ability, great skater, good size, has produced well, especially in the SEL as teenager.

I would have happily followed up the MacDonald trade with giving up a second for Rundblad. There are some warning flags. He has been with four teams, regardless of what the actual trades were. He hasn't been able to force his way into a lineup despite his skill level.
