Boston still needs to get a D man. They've gotta be looking a Hainsey and Mesz as rentals. There isn't much else. Grossmann would be a real nice fit for them, if they're okay with the remaining contract.

In order for the flyers to make the trade with PHX to get rundblad and brisebois they would have had to move two players. They are at the maximum 50/50 contracts. That probably played a role in it because PHX was probably trying to unload a contract with brisebois thrown in there.
- FlyersSteve118

I'm not sure, but I think they're still at 49. They moved Matt Mangene in the deal to leave a contract spot open.

Markstrom and Lack are a solid tandem imo, but no way proven.

Just kind of a funny situation, with Torts and Gillis at the helm. Two morons.

- flyer_nutter

If they're rebuilding, it isn't all that bad. The team is just a mess from a management stand point. I imagine its very awkward walking around the building. Like walking on eggshells.

The shine has come off Rundblad. Still would have been willing to risk a 2nd rounder to see what he can do.

And honestly, the weak UFA class is a reason to roll the dice on a young kid with potential. It's not something I'm pissed off about, though

- Jsaquella

I don't disagree. If it was Rundblad straight up for a 3rd, who cares. Do it. I'm just saying that at this point I can't get worked up about missing out on him. If this was last years trade deadline I'd have felt differently. He's skating into his mid twenties now with his blades barely wet with NHL snow.

My take on the deal is that MacDonald is Homers answer to Timonen's retirement. You got a guy who logged 25+ Mins on the Isles, he is certainly capable of playing on the top line but he won't be as effective playing 25+ mins compared to 20 mins. I think Homers plan is to have 3 pairings of guys who can be considered top 4 Dmen and split the time evenly. You got Macdonald Coburn, Grossman Streit and Gus and Schenn. None of these guys are Dunca Keiths or Shea Webers but they are solid Dmen

I don't think having two former Islanders is in any way a factor.
- MJL

Maybe not... But its not like we are picking players off teams with defensive depth. We are taking the scraps off bad defensive teams (streit, McDonald, schenn, LOL @ Gervais). Just a concern.

Mangene was moved because the flyers have to get rid of a contract to add a contract. Can't make a trade without including a player when you are up against the maximum.

Everyone here knows one of the main problems with this Flyers team is their D is unbalanced, too many stay at home, less mobile guys.

Macdonald can skate and most likely will improve their balance on D.
It should help them.

It doesn't fix all the issues.

I sure hope they can resign him after giving up 2 picks. I am worried that he supposedly already turned down a 4 year deal for 16M.

My main complaint is they could have signed him in the summer and kept the picks.
But there is no doubt the D needs some help now, and with them right in the mix for the playoffs I give them credit for going for it and trying to fix a hole.

I'm mad because if he had just traded Luongo last year we wouldn't be dealing with Schneider being in our conference for the next X years.

The Flyers are going to almost certainly do something else, though -- somebody has to go.

I don't think it's a whole lot different the abrupt about face the Flyers did a few years ago. Seems as though they have changed their minds on where they're at.

We should have traded for Luongo? I would much rather have Mason.

I'm not worked up at all. I'm simply discussing a move that happened and that I would have liked my team to have been involved.

Rundbld might be a bust. They've scouted MacDonald, and feel he will stabilize their defense. Nobody knows if Rundblad can or would do that. I'd just like to see them roll the dice on a guy like that.

Their ownership won't force the team to sign a big name goalie though

The Flyers weren't at the maximum before they trade. Unless I'm wrong, they were at 49 before.

With the slide rule the Flyers were at 49 contracts. By adding Mangene they remain at 49.

With the exception of Gervais, I don't view any of those players as scraps.
