His play this year has been better than last.
His calibre is a typically top 15 defender who has the ability to play himself into the top 10 in good years.
We should be less concerned about paying a few hundred thousand too much for top end talent than we are about paying millions too much for mid-range players.
As a proportion of his salary, Lupul is more overpaid than Phaneuf. To me, the boat load of overpaid 3-5.5 million dollar guys poses a bigger problem than one or two slightly inflated salaries of top talent. You pay a premium because it's rare. |

We can argue all day whether Phaneuf is worth 7 mill a year.
But honestly, if he isnt on the team, we dont see playoffs for a very long time.
Phaneuf is miles ahead of every other defenseman we have right now.

Jay Bo has a pretty damn good d partner though ( And plays on a suffocating defensive team)
I would be very interested to see Phaneuf play on a team like St Louis with a guy like Pietrangelo.
