Sign and trades are rare in hockey. I don't remember seeing one at the TDL. Usually a team will acquire the player then announce a deal is complete.

The main reason, like I say, is that unlike the NBA there's pretty much no incentives for the player to agree to it. The new CBA has some since you can re-sign your own players for 8 years (and the max UFA contract is 7) but still not that much, I don't think.

Yea it would have been risky to let him walk or deal him as a rental with Staal's future with the Rangers up in the air. Imagine if we lost both of them within a 1 year span? That's as big of a loss as the Devils took losing Parise and Kovalchuk only on defense.

I think Staal will be extended in the offseason though.
