Kesler for Maata is just not a smart hockey trade. It destroys Vancouver down the middle, which is why the centerpiece of the deal needs to be a young center, and it destroys the Penguins on defense, which is risky with their pending free agents.

Values aside, this is just a stupid proposal.

Yes. Top pairing defensive defenseman. He can contribute a little offensively too. I think he plays on their 2nd PP unit.

Yes. This is a really great contract. He's worth $5.5M and would've gotten closer to $6.5M-7M on the open market.

Toughness, leadership, durability, consistency, experience, logs ridiculous minutes, and is one of the best in the league at shutting down the opposition's star players. Girardi is the real deal.

Here's a hint for future sign and trade fans - an 8 year deal is the only reason a player would agree to a sign and trade and even then it probably won't happen

Sign and trades are rare in hockey. I don't remember seeing one at the TDL. Usually a team will acquire the player then announce a deal is complete.
