This is true although they would be dumping Sutter who is due for a raise and they were probably planning on letting one of Niskanen and Orpik walk anyway. They're pretty deep in terms of defensive prospects so maybe they could make it work.

Ugh. I like Girardi. Wanted the Flyers to take a run at him in the offseason.

It would put the Pens in cap hell for next year. All but says goodbye to Niskanen and Orpik.

Edit: I'm not sure the Pens have a 2nd. I think the Canucks would do it for Sutter+Pouliot+2014 1st.

Kesler for Maata is just not a smart hockey trade. It destroys Vancouver down the middle, which is why the centerpiece of the deal needs to be a young center, and it destroys the Penguins on defense, which is risky with their pending free agents.

I know it's what Vancouver wants but I wonder about the practicality of trading a Johansen/Stepan type center for Kesler (as Bob McKenzie claims they desire). Just strikes me as pretty foolish long term.
