Jeez, till I saw this and tried to come up with another good Shawshank quote it never occurred to me how much being a Flyers fan is like being Andy Dufresne.

i know our transition game is awful...but I wish we had a pure sniper type its seems our teams first instinct is to pass...maybe it was an Olympic hangover or something but that was the worst I have seen outta Jake in a while...it was like it was high on goofballs or something...he had no idea where anything was..chalking it up to a bad night but WOW he was off last night

Matt Read has consistently scored at a 24 goal per season pace for the Flyers. To label him as little more than a PKer is inaccurate.
- BulliesPhan87

Not to mention, he's not exactly part of the problem. He's young-ish, fast, productive, versatile.

It would be nice to have more of a natural goal scorer on the team, but to me, its a luxury at this point. Thats not something they need to go out of their way to acquire. They score enough goals to win games. Team defense and offering help to their defenseman when leaving the zone are the key components to this Flyers' team.

He plays the game hard too. Its very rare that you say "Matt Read had a bad game."

Not saying he isnt important, but to label him a constant 20 goal scorer is premature he done it once...He will do it this year too, but he gotta do it more then twice for me to label him a constant 20 goal threat....He is a versatile two way forward, but I think everybody on here over values him, just my opinion

He scored at a 24 goal pace last season as well, and is on the same pace this season. I'm pretty comfortable with my description, thanks.

24 goals in 2011-12
11 goals in 42 games in 2012-13 (Thats 20 goals when prorated)
on pace for 22 goals this season

I'd say thats a fairly consistent pace. He also played most of last year injured.

Holmgren cuts his teeth on 2nd round picks, lmao... I think there would be a team who would trade that for Mez. He really has picked his career up off the ER floor...
And I agree antyhing we do get will likely be package around the draft - but it would allow us to do so...

Who's saying he's great? He's good. No one's saying he's an elite player. He's a good, dependable guy who can provide good offense and help you out on special teams while playing any position.

No one is calling him great, but I think our differences lie in how replaceable he is. Most of us feel it would be difficult to replace everything he does with 1 player.

He's a player you win with. And hes on a reasonable deal with the cap going up. Good solid player any team would like to have

There isn't a team in the NHL who wouldn't want Read. He's versatile enough to fit any need a team has at forward (Except top line center).

I think the problem may lie in our differing definition of a core player. Maybe to you it means the best players. To me, it means any piece you have in place that you want to keep in place for the coming future, whether it's a franchise scorer or a handy jack of all trades.

I think the perfect definition is John Madden. He's different than Read, but he was a core player who wasn't a top scorer.

From Jak,

Matt Read is one of the more versatile players in the ENTIRE NHL.

Also called him a poor man's Patrick Sharp....Not even in the same category

Here's a positive from last night... Luke Schenn had a pretty solid game with and without the puck.

Thats why he said poor man's. They have similar styles, but Sharp is the better offensive player.

Except for the Raffi Torres goal with 2 seconds left.
