The Canucks know they aren't going to get that. This is one of two things. It's normal for the price to be higher this far away from the deadline in initial talks. The Canucks are setting the bar high, for the start of trade negotiations with any team regarding Kesler. That's SOP. It's either that, or is simply the Canucks way of saying, we really don't want to trade Kesler. And the only way we would even consider it, is if we were blown away with an offer.

You don't ever start out asking for low value, you always ask for more knowing in talks it will change.

That's actually fair, in my book. If I was Vancouver, I wouldn't be insulted if the Pens asked for a fourth-rounder back -- back in the day, the "Three-Piece Deal" of a 1st, roster player and prospect was reserved for elite talent.

Kesler's a good NHL player. He's not a Three-Piece Deal guy.

Because you never know if the guy on the other end of the phone is an idiot, drunk or desperate.

That gets leaked, gives people an idea of what it might take and it might inspire somebody to make a serious offer.

Ha! No wonder we're not seeing any trades in this league anymore -- nobody's that drunk or stupid, and 90 percent of the teams are one good week from being in the playoffs if they're not in a spot currently

A combo of those will also work.

I disagree with the tactic itself -- I just think it's silly. I remember reading some quotes from some GMs about Darcy Regier after he got fired, and the complaint was two-fold: He always overvalued his players and his "asks" were always ridiculous, which made trading with Buffalo extremely difficult and not something they wanted to do

Anyone a Dan Brown fan? I'm just finishing the Lost Symbol, and I'm wondering if Inferno is worth the download. I enjoyed Lost Symbol, but not sure if I can handle Robert Langdon back to back.

BTW I read all the Star Wars books twice, and thats the reason I had to move on. Wish there was another great fantasy series I can get into... I have done Potter, LOTR about 4 times each... I've done Shannara.

If Dune worth the read, or Hunger Games? Or should I just go onto Inferno?

P.S. I used to like Clive Cussler as a boy, and started out reading Bond novels...

Dune is one of the best books I ever read, the sequels aren't as good though.
I highly recommend Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, its fantastic.

That's not going to make a team walk away, nor will other GM's be insulted by it. Any GM with real interest in Kesler knows that the bidding will start high. The only teams that would walk away, are teams that don't have real genuine interest, and were just kicking the tires.

If they're willing to trade a good prospect, top six forward and a 1st rounder for Kesler, yes.

Maybe because other GM's were trying to steal away quality assets on the cheap from Buffalo. Sounds like sour grapes to me. If a GM places a ridiculous price on a player, that's a way of saying the only way I'm giving this player up if you blow me away with a deal.

When you go to buy a car, does the price start at what the dealer is willing to sell it for? Of course not. The car dealer knows there is going to be a negotiation, and he also wants to see how stupid someone is. Some walk in and pay sticker price.

That's not going to make a team walk away, now will other GMM's be insulted by it. Any GM with real interest in Kesler knows that the bidding will start high. The only teams that would walk away, are teams that don't have real genuine interest, and were just kicking the tires.

Granted, Luongo's not a bad consolation prize, and his contract was dicey.

But Mike Gillis reportedly would never move off his initial ask. All through last season, all the way up to the trade deadline. Then, by the time he started to negotiate with Toronto, Dave Nonis said "screw you."

Then, Nonis acquires Jonathan Bernier...leaving Mike Gillis holding two goaltenders, dealing the younger player who has a bright future for a draft pick.

Again: I'm not disputing what you guys are saying. I'm saying that when you play with fire like that, not everybody's going to wait for your ask to come down.

Parity is the biggest issue. Winnipeg was dead in the water a month ago, they were gonna trade Byfuglien, Kane and everyone else. Now they're 3 points out of the race and playing well.

Teams are so scared of "selling low" and maybe missing playoffs and of even losing a deal.

I don't think it backfired in that case. The GM made a decision not to give away Luongo, unless the price was met. He didn't have to trade Schneider. He could have dealt Luongo.

Sure it backfired -- you traded the younger goalie, kept the goalie who you benched, and now you're 9th in the West and talking about retooling your team to get younger...with the 34-year-old goalie instead of the 26-year-old goalie.

That's a straight-up miscalculation of leverage, and it was costly.
