do you really believe the value of players rights in the summer is better than trading them as a rental?

I dont think I can remember the last time the habs traded a pending UFA in the summer for anything

- hamiltonhabfan

I never suggested that in the blog.

Offering a 1 year deal is ridiculous, borderline offensive by MB.

Best to trade him at this point, unless they can agree on 2.

I think a lot of teams have similar situations, where it is pretty tough to decide what to do. WTF does Nonis do with Bolland?
- Aetherial

Trade for a 3rd round pick. Maybe a 2nd round pick if Nonis keeps the medical bill?

It's not offensive at all.
If Markov wants a deal before the summer, that's the only deal he can be offered. That's the business these guys are in. He's been around long enough to understand that.

nope. everything you write in here--directed at me--is a shot or an insult. As I've told you before, I'm always happy to debate the content, but you have zero respect in your comments. It's tiring, and I don't think it should be allowed to stand as a precedent for the people that come here everyday.
- EricEngels

You want respect then you should give respect, you have never given respect to a poster who has had a different opinion then you.

You have insulted me tenfold just today and all i have said to you is that I find the comments section better then the cheerleadery blog. Sorry for thinking that, you may return to your pedestal

I undrstand but shouldn't the habs be a team looking for the better of the two options?

do you honestly believe this team can win this year or the next?

Can you not just have a conversation with the guy and answer his question?

there's no point with you. really. you don't get it. I don't have the same discourse with everybody else here, but with you, it's different. you are a habitual line-crosser. period.

No, i think it's offensive considering he is playing 25 minutes, for the same team as always and considering what he is asking.

The real thing is: Do i care about Markov getting offended??

Why not offer 2 years at 10 or 11 and then cut bait when guys like Bealieu are more able to take up the slack?

I don't want to clog the forum reiterating everything I wrote in the blog. That's the point of having the blog. Read, think about it, then react and discuss.

Trade him or sign him. Letting him walk for nothing is just dumb. It's not like this team is a contender for the cup if he stays a few weeks.

They won't get much by trading his rights this summer.

Great blog Eric

Only thing I would disagree with is that by trading Markov is sending a message to the team that they are giving up. These are professional athletes who in these matters understand the business side of hockey. They're not blind to where the team is at and where it is going and why tough decisions are made. They also look at what will benefit this team in the long run.
My two cents.
If he turns down the 1 year deal they should trade him.

A Miracle could always happen, but likely not.

They need to look 3 years from now. When they will have their current players at a very good position:
PK - 27yo
Paches - 28yo
Galchenyuk - 23yo
Pleks and Prust - UFA year
Tinordi and Beaulieu - Regular roster players

Surround them with other talent and 3 years from now could be a very good year.

tempting, but too risky. it's not about what Markov has earned on his own, it's about the team's cap long-term, and their situation.

Sign him now to two years, and his value is destroyed this summer with an injury between now and then. And then another 6 mil that could've gone to someone else (or a few others) is handcuffed for two years.

The Habs need capspace for Subban, for Galchenyuk and Gallagher, for Eller maybe. They need space for when they'll actually have incentive to do some shopping or make a trade--for when the team is good enough.

If at the end of the year, Markov's healthy, and he hasn't tailed off like he always has, then offer him the 2 years. He may not take it, but he'll still hold value as you trade his rights, and you'll get cap space.

It's not about the $$ figure, it's about the years, and keeping options open.

Come on, there's close to no value for a guy's rights...so you're saying you'd rather risk losing Markov for a 3rd-4th rounder than trade him right now if there's an interesting offer on the table at the deadline ?

Thanks,
I'm not suggesting it would send the wrong message to the team.

I'm suggesting the team would be seriously hampered this season if they traded him.

And you know what, the Habs aren't likely to win the cup, but they have a chance to make it out of the East with the goalie they have, and how open the East actually is. We'll see how the next couple of weeks go.
