I liked your earlier idea of trading for a top 4 guy like Daley then signing a free agent as well.

Read or Schenn won't get you a top defenseman though. Thats the problem. Defenseman are so much more coveted that it will take a strong offer to get one. Maybe read AND schenn get you a guy like Byfuglien or Yandle.

- PhillySportsGuy

Not to say that Daley isn't a good player. But if the Flyers trade for him and play him in the top 4. He will join the ranks of whipping boys for Flyers fans.

Girardi is not just an average defenseman.
- MJL

Neither is L Schenn was my point... Girardi wasn't anything special when he broke into the league... a middling two-way dman at best... he worked hard to improve in his own zone, and then Torts gave him an identity and he ran with it.

If Nashville trades Shea Weber within the next 3 seasons, Poile will be fired immediately.
- jmatchett383

I'm pretty sure that Poile isn't trading Weber without the blessing of ownership.

Well if they traded for Daley and signed Girardi, that might be a nice mix.

All this talk about a franchise defenseman.... Haley's comet might roll around again before the Flyers land one.

Flyers have been in existence since 1967, and as everyone knows they have never drafted and developed that top pairing stud that they desperately need. That is the way to get said player. Draft him, develop him, and have him cost controlled for a few years. Most top dmen don't make it to FA, and to acquire one in a trade would open up Grand Canyon sized holes in the rest of the lineup.

The only Norris contending dman this franchise has ever put on the ice was Mark Howe.

Eric Desjardin was a top 5 vote getter at least one Season, if not more.

I think Coburn is above average, but Girardi would give the team a steady guy who can eat up minutes. He's not a 40 point guy, but he will get between 20-30 every year along with his strong defensive work. Guys like that are very valuable. Thats why I think the Flyers should jump at a chance to get one without giving up assets. Just overpay for him. Its as simple as that.
- PhillySportsGuy

I'd still be surprised if Girardi even makes it to free agency

The funny thing is, even after the Clarkson fiasco, some GM will give Callahan the money and years he wants
- Jsaquella

They signed Clarkson for 7 years. I think they're going to let it play out and see what happens. Injuries and suspensions have had an effect.

I think the Rangers would really like to get him signed. They have $42M committed to 10 players next year with several rfas. The worst thing that happened to them was Brad Richards playing well. I'm sure they're tempted to amnesty him with 5 years left on his deal.

Although he was taken 15th, and Reinhart was taken 4th, I think Pulock will end up being the steal of the draft. That dude is putting up better numbers than Shea Weber was in the WHL, which is usually a good measuring stick for juniors to the NHL for defensemen.

Edit: This is a broken thought. I meant to also say that I think Pulock is the better of the 2 picks (he and Reinhart).

- jmatchett383

I have a feeling Nichushkin is going to be the steal of the draft. How this guy drops to to is beyond me.

That wouldn't be bad. But that is an expensive 3rd pair.

Thanks for this.

I hope the Oilers don't get Ekblad. I hope they are stuck with another forward. Although, these top guys are more two-way types.

Yea, I think you would have to move Grossmann and let either Laurdsen, Gus, or Morin depening who plas well take the 6th spot. Though the defense wont be that overpaid if that happens IMO.

If you could trade the 20 guys on O and D on this team for the top 20 picks of last years draft... would you?

Can't be worried about a spot like that, I'd be happy with Julius Honka on of the few D I do like as a round 1 choice, the others are top 10 quality.
