that may work.....but to even get a legit top 2 its going to cost them.

That depends. Maybe there are guys out there near the end of a contract, they you can try an poach. Or other guys that are nearing the end of their career. The best thing about creating a balanced defense, is you dont have to go look for a guy that will be on your team for the next 5-10 years...

I would call Florida and see what they would want for Campbell if they absorb part of the cap hit... Maybe St. Louis would be willing to move J-Bo for something they need. IMO with the youth we have on defense we dont need to look for "The Guy" for the next 5-10 years... we just need the right GUYS.

and maybe thats why Weber is not a Flyer. but any deal for Weber is and was going to hurt.
- landros 2

Look man, I'm probably the biggest Shea Weber fan on this board. But the pure insanity of crippling your team at several places to acquire him is just straight-up not smart. It really isn't, not at all. And I would like nothing more than for the Flyers to get him, but not "at any cost," and any cost is what it will take.

While I am more of a guy that would rather balance out our defense than trade for an "elite" guy... I will say that you are more likely to be able to fill your offensive wholes through FA and trades then you are to fill a Top defenseman that same way.

For example, lets say you have trade someone like Read or Schenn for a top defenseman. You can always sign a guy like Calahan or Gaborik in FA... Not that I am suggesting either, just an example that you can still get A- forwards in FA while the best your likely to get is a B defenseman.

- SchennBros

In order to get a top d-man.. you are gonna need to give up way more than either or both of schenn and read.

If you want a legit #1 d-man... Bogo, Weber, Doughty, etc... You better be ready to move either Giroux, or a package like Voracek, Simmonds +.

I liked your earlier idea of trading for a top 4 guy like Daley then signing a free agent as well.

Read or Schenn won't get you a top defenseman though. Thats the problem. Defenseman are so much more coveted that it will take a strong offer to get one. Maybe read AND schenn get you a guy like Byfuglien or Yandle.

I'd rather they target a guy like Kulikov from Florida if they're going to Florida. I'm also not opposed to seeing if Phoenix is interested in moving Rundblad depending on the cost.

wrong guy...never played a video game in my life!!! I am saying the exact opposite....I would trade one of our young centers, Morin and more then one first rounder for Weber.....because without a severe upgrade back there, we are just Lambs to the slaughter come playoffs....if we even make it.

If Nashville trades Shea Weber within the next 3 seasons, Poile will be fired immediately.

I think most of us would like to go for the 'power in numbers' type deal until the young guys start to trickle through. Homer has had some success finding some top 4 gems without giving up much. Carle, Coburn, Mez, Grossmann were all solid, unspectacular moves.

Any deal to get a "legit top pair defenseman" is not worth it. Trading Schenn Coots and 1sts (or something equal) for one player to fill one hole now makes your forward corps immediately worse, lacking in depth, and less promising.

Not worth it.

Now, a lesser deal that stays away from guys like that...maybe for Dailey- I'd listen to. But blowing up the young promising core that homer recently brought in, including the young goalie, for one player is assbackwards

I think it would be difficult for Poile to trade Weber after the owners used their personal wealth to pay the first few years of his signing bonus (poison pill). I'm sure Poile gave them a speech like "We need to re-sign this guy or we will be the joke of the league having lost 2 franchise defenseman in 1 offseason"
- PhillySportsGuy

Yeah, you could offer them G plus every 1st from here to Timbuktu and they still might decline... at some point, it ceased to be about hockey, and started to be about principle/respect.

Oh I agree. My point was, it will be a lot easier to replace a Read and Schenn through FA then it will be to find a Yandle or Big Buff hit FA. Not that I want them to do that, but its not like if they did make a deal for multiple offensive pieces they would be playing the line of Shelly-Cote-Rosehill. They can just go out and sign some forwards.

Most interesting trade I can bring to the table...

Brayden Schenn for Dmitry Kulikov.

Florida may pay you to take Kulikov at this point. Rumors are that he's going to Putinland where the gays are shot and Unicorns are used as hamburger meat.

The idea is to continue to draft and develop, maybe one of them is the big franchise defenseman or they're all good enough that we don't need one. There is no quick fix to be had. You're gonna have to gut it out.

I like Kulikov, but I wouldn't move anything of major value for him. Maybe a 3rd and a guy like Konan. If not, then no thanks.

Both good ideas, though I hear Kulikov is KHL bound. But now that is the right thinking. This current group of guys arent bad NHL defenseman... they just arent the "right" nhl defenseman to play together. I think they can completely retool this defense.

They have to keep Schenn because of my SN.... and I doubt Streit is tradable... And I like Coburn as a roleplaying guy. He compliments a lot of players... So go out and add 3 guys that makes them look good.
