It wasn't a slash, it was an average poke at the goalie pad in an attempt to dislodge the puck as the whistle was being blown.

Can't make that call in a gold medal game in OT. Just can't do it unless it's fairly eggregious and clearly after the whistle. The penalty on Canada for the cross check to the head was a legitmate and eggregious penalty. In an NHL game that would have been 5 and a game. Which is neither here nor there because this isn't the NHL, but the point is you can't follow up a legitimate call with a make up call. There was no make up call warranted.

Either way, I just think it's a shame that that game ended with sloppy if not down right bad officiating, including what should have been a penalty shot and not a 2 minute cross check.

They only made the call because of an earlier warning... which they clearly thought no longer applied.
It was a stupid play to make by the player. the goalie had it in her chest area... not gonna dislodge that with a slash to the pads.

The one earlier was brutal...just a random two hand hack. You have to know the ref is looking to even it up in OT and have to be smarter than that.

and yeah should have been a penalty shot, linesmen almost cost Canada the game earlier. Better luck next time yanks!

they were both ridiculous calls in OT of a gold medal game. the cross check was stupid and nasty but it wasn't dangerous. 5 and a game in the NHL? not a chance. that doesn't get a call in NHL OT. the 2 penalties were ridiculous.
- DoubleDown

An intentional clear shot to the head of a player doesn't get an automatic match penalty in the NHL??? I guess I'm not sure what NHL you're watching lately then because that's exactly the kind of play that gets a player tossed now days.

And that was a legitmate call, malicious or not that has to be called in any game Gold medal or not. Just as the cross checking penalty has to be a penalty shot.

it was a trip on the breakaway and should have been a penalty shot...US player came from behind and their skates got tangled causing the Canadian to trip.

correct call would be penalty shot for tripping

you're exaggerating that play, and you know it.
in OT of a game-7 type situation, only call being made is if a clear scoring chance has been impeded, or if it's a hit so dangerous and so violent there's no choice. that does not get called in the NHL.
this was a physical game for women's hockey. both teams dished out a ton of borderline stuff that went uncalled.

Had the US scored on that "poke" Canada would've been furious.

International rules for handing a penalty shot is different. Played has to be in motion of shooting. Besides, what ref wants to hand out a PS in OT?

I'm sure the refs were looking to add an equalizer penalty to Canada. Unfortunately for ths US we scored before one was found.
