both are rentals , Gaborik is injury prone and Heatley has morphed into a 20 goal scorer , it could work both ways. |

Except the fact that it does absolutely nothing for Columbus. Why deal away a high priced pending UFA just to get another high priced UFA? At least with Gaborik the potential to stay healthy and be a difference maker is there. That time for Heatley has long passed. |

I see the womens officiating is just as bad as the mens. They call a slash on USA for a little tap on Canadas goalie pad trying to free the puck and then a clear take down on what should have been a penalty shot awarded for team Canada that ends up as a cross check? !
Apparently they wanted to try to control the game by trying to even every call up with a phantom or bad call. |

Wow! That's a heartbreaker for the US. I don't think Canada at all deserved that one. But the US didn't play a full 60 minutes and cracked under the pressure of OT. Although I thought the officiating was terrible in the OT. Canada gets 2 minute penalty on a blatent cross check to the head of a US player and then they enjoyed all of 5 seconds of a PP when inexplicably the US was called for slashing on an attempt to dislodge the puck from the goalie.

Yeah. Not good. But it doesn't mean the US would've won. |

Yeah. We got a little sloppy during the last 3 minutes of the third period and all the OT. That cost us 3 goals. |

It wasn't much of a slash on the goalie. But the US was warned earlier in the game about slashing the goalie after the whistle. |

Wasn't at all my point. My point is that once the officials decide to have a hand in the outcome of a game by making bad calls or phantom make up calls, someone is going to get screwed. I thought the slashing penalty 5 seconds into the US PP in OT was about as phantom as they come.
US had to win that one in regulation if they were going to win at all. They choked it away in the last 3 minutes to a team they had outworked and out played for the better part of 56 minutes. |

I hate that Canada won it that way. Scoring on a power play in overtime after two questionable calls.
I honestly think a shootout win would have been more decisive than that crap.
That said, the officials did everything in their power to give the US the gold in 2002, so I'll still take the gold.
I wonder if the 4 Olympic drought is karma for stepping on the Canadian flag before the final in 2002. Hockey God's don't like anyone dissing the Maple Leaf. |

It wasn't a slash, it was an average poke at the goalie pad in an attempt to dislodge the puck as the whistle was being blown.
Can't make that call in a gold medal game in OT. Just can't do it unless it's fairly eggregious and clearly after the whistle. The penalty on Canada for the cross check to the head was a legitmate and eggregious penalty. In an NHL game that would have been 5 and a game. Which is neither here nor there because this isn't the NHL, but the point is you can't follow up a legitimate call with a make up call. There was no make up call warranted.
Either way, I just think it's a shame that that game ended with sloppy if not down right bad officiating, including what should have been a penalty shot and not a 2 minute cross check. |

they were both ridiculous calls in OT of a gold medal game. the cross check was stupid and nasty but it wasn't dangerous. 5 and a game in the NHL? not a chance. that doesn't get a call in NHL OT. the 2 penalties were ridiculous. |
