I hear this defense of the shootout often, and I don't buy it. Even if you don't like the shootout, you're still invested in your team and the outcome of the game. It's like a bad call, you're still going to watch the game even if you don't like it, and you're still going to react to the ensuing powerplay, the same as any other. - BulliesPhan87
Very good way of looking at it. I really wasn't offering it as a defense of it. Just saying that I don't think anyone can say it's not exciting. And I think that's why the NHL has it.

I gotcha. That's definitely what Bettman's given as the NHL's stance. I still think it's ultimately anti-climactic. Maybe I'm just a big downer |

I used to be 100% anti-shoot out, but as time moves on, I've warmed up to it. I'd still rather have overtime and ties, but it doesn't get me all riled up anymore. |

I'm not a fan of the shootout…but I don't understand the objection to having the same guy go over and over again. I actually thought it made it more fun. I'm all for sending the same guy out every time.
Russia looked like the better team. Got to give to the USA, tho, for hanging in there. Thought the US was better in OT. Crazy to call that go-ahead goal off because of the net being dislodged. It was kinda nice seeing a net knocked off its mooring without having to hear Coastie explain about the "Marsh Peg" I could see calling it if the net was knocked a foot off, but it was barely off. I didn't see the replay…did the ref blow play dead when it was knocked off? |

Most of the purists don't like it. But from my experience the overwhelming majority of fans love the shootout. I've been to a lot of Flyers games when there is a shootout. And there is excitement and a buzz in the crowd, and everyone is up on their feet. - MJL
Yes, it's hard to be excited anytime the game is on the line. I think it's something that over time won't bother people anymore. It's hard to get used to any change to the game, especially one this big. I'm sure some will never like it and I can understand why. |

I think the US could have played better. I thought their puck possession was not that good and their forechecking wasn't that strong.
It is nice to see a team being able to get out of the defensive zone as smoothly as they did.
I think the US got a break with the disallowed goal. As far as the shoot out goes I will take it against the Russkies. |

I mean, I'd rather see a shootout than a turd on my pillow, but that's not exactly a ringing endorsement either. |

I don't mind shootouts, but allowing the same player to shoot over and over again is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. - PLindbergh31

Random but not so random side note- remember when the Phils and Mets were on ESPN the night they got Bin Laden?
Remember the murmur of the crowd as it got louder and turned into a booming USA chant with literally everyone in the stadium shouting? The players not in the game or not playing the field were going back to the clubhouses to see what the hell was going on...everyone on the ball field was looking around confused.
What a scene that was. I remember that clearly. |

Anyone else watching this Sweden Latvia game? Much closer than I thought it would be. Latvia's goalie has been outstanding. |

Only a King would be able to hold mighty Latvia to 3 goals. |

Im watching Switzerland/Czech: Swiss up 1-0 with 5:37 left in 3rd. Both the Swiss commitment to team D and Hiller have been fantastic. |
