Risk of injury every practice, every game, regardless.
- Woderwick

Ya but that's part of the NHL game.....going overseas to play in a non NHL event during the season....different ball game.

Just my hunch from what I've heard about the topic.

The owners hate it.

- robin_steele264

they hate the risk to their asset.. they love the influx of money however

there is also the next CBA to consider.. or euro stars bolting to the KHL so they can play for their countries

its not all about the owners desires

you must be joking

the popularity of the sport has grown faster than ever the past four years.

this isnt assumptive.. this is fact.

- Dozzer

True.
But it is because of the Vancouver games? maybe a teenie tiny bit.

hockey is a game
and a business

if the players cant play in the olympics if they play in the NHL

then i guess the NHL is going to lose star players - who will be paid in other league, ala KHL for 10 mil a year.

- big_dion

I really doubt that'll be much of an issue

exactly

how would washington like it if Ovie said (frank) ya then.. and left to play for the KHL so he could represent his country at the olympics

there is more to it than just what these selfish owners want.

or hey.. how about NBC.. who happens to have the NHL tv deal AND the olympic coverage in the states? hmm....

fact is.. its about money and assets. nothing more.

say by to the euro stars then

the NHL no longer has a monopoly on big contracts for hockey

also.. a certain owner of the flyers stands to gain money by them going.. and he has a poop ton of sway in this league

I agree. It's about money and assets. That's why they won't be back.

They could make big coin with a World Cup....which could be NHL owned.

I really believe the league is leaning away from the Olympics to the World Cup...which would be an off season event.

the players opinions matter as well

you guys seem to be forgetting this

the ball is not entirely in the owners court.. someone like Ovie has a poop ton of sway... if he says he's going again and nobody can stop him.. who will?

Right.

No need to get angry... Like I said, if rather they keep going, but I doubt they will and I understand why.

I think the idea of the Olympics being for amateurs is over. It's all about the best of the best.

I guarantee you EVERY player there WANTS to be in the Olympics and wants to play for their own country with their brothers from the motherland.

This is truly the best of the best. As other countries begin to become powerhouses it'll get even more competitive.

I for one just think they need to play in safer places. Where are the next 2 winter Olympics again? China and Korea (probably wrong)

You have the whole country with you, not just your teams fan base. Surreal experience. Just look how upset St. Louis was. He wanted to play for his country more than Tampa

Next one is in Korea. Let all the Korean players quit the league and go play. Problem solved.

But NBC barely shows hockey. A World Cup would allow them another money making opportunity. So they will promote that option.

Plenty of people tuning in to their prime time to see the other events.

I don't remember him being anything but classy and graceful....unless by upset you meant scoring 4 goals against the Sharks...then he must have been livid.

I don't think they will be at the next one either. If it were at a hockey power nation maybe...but I think the NHL ownership really does want to step away and host a World Cup, where they can make more cash. The Union would like to see some of the profits as well.I might be wrong, but that's what my gut tells me.

would you care to go do some research on this and retract your statement?

i'll give you the chance if you'd like.
