I am thankful half the people who talk about trades and signings are no the GM of this team, we would be in last place every year with no shot of improvement.

I was hoping we already would have had that bridge deal signed this far in the season, but it makes me scratch my head why we haven't and makes me wonder if we are going to trade schenn
- arichardson22

Schenn's agent had discussions with Homer last summer but they both decided to wait until this offseason to work things out.

It's not a big deal. I don't think they're very far apart.

If they do trade Schenn, it needs to be a deal where they get a good defenseman in return. Not Vanek. You want Vanek, sign him as a UFA.

so then who do you think (if there is even anyone worth trading for) the flyers should try to acquire before the deadline? I like Trevor Daley but not sure what would be required to get him that wouldnt set us back

I like Downie more than you. I think he can really add to the team. He played so well with Couturier and Read earlier this season.
- PhillySportsGuy

Yes, he had about 15 really solid games. I don't care if it's due to injury or not, the bottom line is that he has taken about 11 steps backwards since he went out of the lineup. I don't care WHY he's regressed, but the fact that he HAS regressed.

If he comes out of the break and is playing as expected, then yippee. If not, we traded a guy who's the type of player who wins you playoff games for a handful of good games.

I'd guess a cap hit around 3.75M - 4M.

Still would rather have Girardi than Vanek.

No way. This is his first rfa year. He'll be around $3M. I think it might be lower. Look at the comps like Stepan.

I don't think the Flyers are a seller or a buyer. There's no way they should be trading picks/prospects, and unless they get a crazy offer, they shouldn't be moving players either. Go forward with what you have and hope for the best, basically.

It depends how long the deal is for. Kadri and Stepan both got two years at around ~$3m.

Not a chance. I think Nazim Kadri and Derek Stepan are where Schenn's camp opens, and the Flyers talk them down. Somewhere in the $2.5M-$2.75M per year.

He did help right the ship though. That's why I don't see him as a sunk cost if he doesn't bounce back. The line of Downie-Couts-Read was the first to sustain some offense. The Giroux line then came along a few weeks later. If not for Downie, this team may be in a much worse position.

Yeah good point. 2 years @ a tick over 3M per. One thing to consider also is if an emerging RFA player has a beastly playoff. Could get 'Umbergered' into a rougher cap hit.

Maybe. I'm just biased because 1) I hate watching him skate, he looks like a 6-year-old, 2) he's not very productive offensively (so far, this season) nor is he doing things away from the puck to be productive, and 3) we traded Max Talbot for him. So yes, my vision of him is blurred, I admit. I just do not and will not like the guy.

They'll have the money to sign Schenn even if he has a great playoff run and wins the Conn Smythe.

Trading Schenn would be made in order to make another area of the team better. They wouldn't be moving him for a pick in order to create cap space.

Oh yeah I know. Cap is going up and there is salary to be shed.

I don't want to trade either Schenn at this point honestly.

He's been streaky and could command a good chunk of cash. Him at center also effects Vinny playing an unnatural position of RW. All that money on Vinny to play RW and its not working the way we all hoped. I was thinking defensive prospect since Islanders are looking for D
- arichardson22

Sure he's a bit streaky but that usually comes with youth, so Im not worried. And te streakiness would actually work against him commanding any chunk of cash. I'd rather deal Vinny (if possible) than Schenn considering that Flyers should be peak in a few years, not now. I like Vanek but he would be a luxury, not a real need (good puck-moving D is a bigger one).

If they're in cap trouble and want to resign Schenn, they'd either trade him (maybe in a package) for a significant D upgrade or they'd trade someone else (probably Grossmann) to free up the space and hope Lauridsen can replace him.

I know you never liked the deal. I thought the team would really miss Talbot on the PK. They probably would if Raffl didn't become such an integral part of the PK and overall team.

I think Downie does some good things and has a decent amount of skill. He played well, got hurt, got demoted to the 4th line after returning from injury, gave poor effort as a 4th liner, got benched, came back with no confidence and, now, finally returned to the 3rd line.

Like Bill said, this break will be a great time for Downie to get himself right physically, emotionally and mentally.

In my opinion Lauridsen could not replace the solid game in / game out play of Grossmann. I know you guys give him grief but he's a good stay at home defensemen and we do need those... Lauridsen has potential to be one but last season didn't prove it to me.

I will own up here and say that I did not expect to be so pleasantly surpside by the Raffl House. His first month wasn't so hot when he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn but since then he's made EVERY line he's been on better. A super nice surprise.

Oh no, I'm not saying that at all. I'm just saying that if it comes down to needing $$ to sign Schenn, I think they'd move another asset (Grossmann as an example) and try to fill in with an AHL player/cheaper UFA. Just an example.

Agreed on Downie.

He has a lot to gain ($$$$) from having a good run, down the stretch.

Vinny needs the break too.
