The problem is the Flyers don't have much depth in the system. Any trade for a top defenseman will need to include Couts++. No one can do what Couturier does. I think they hope Laughton can develop, but he's not ready for that yet.

They can't add without subtracting from another significant part of the roster.

- PhillySportsGuy

They have a little more depth than people think. 2 and 3 years ago, they had none. But Homer has done a better job lately. His undrafted and overseas signings have been spot on. I like our chances of having a great offseason. Health plays a huge part, but next year we could be really deadly.

He would be a good addition. 2 solid FA moves and we are a contender. Honestly, we really are that close.

+Girardi
-Timonen

I would put their chances at very slim right now. We'll see about next year.

The Pens traded a guy like Joe Morrow and could trade Despres and still feel good about their young defense with Letang signed long term, Maata and Pouliot.

I personally would try to keep Kimmo one more year for that 3rd pairing, some PP and PK. Him and Schenn are perfect for it. I would like to see Grossmann and Coburn back together. They are a perfect compliment to each other. That damn Streit throws the monkey wrench into things. Girardi with a J-bo-esque player. That would be a dream defense.

I would like to have Timonen come back. Streit has been pretty good lately. It's all about how much money they have to spend.

We aren't going to get that ONE guy who makes us the favorite. We just need the right guy to bring order to that choas defense and our forwards to play the right way. We need Giroux to not stop skating and take a wussy slash at a player on an odd man rush. We need Downie to play within his limits and not think he is Giroux. He the defense to KEEP IT SIMPLE. We need Mason to play very well. We need Hartnell to fall more. Then we have a winning team.

I think Homer saw a KImmo-lite in Streit and though, here is the replacement. I would rahter him have gone with Gus then Streit. Striet is not that great. He is a 3rd pairng, 2nd PP player. Horrible contract. I love that Homer and the Flyers try to win it every year. I was glad to see the core still intact. That signing screwed for a bit on defense. Maybe a 33 year old Kimmo and Streit work, but I don't se and good partner for him. Coburn.....maybe

3.5 I would do. 3 would be loevely, but he is Kimmo, he could get 4 easily in FA.

Right now, if the Flyers didn't have the elements that Streit is bringing to the lineup, they'd be in big trouble. He has his limitations and weaknesses. But he adds some good things. If you take away his point shot, the Flyers have zero threat from the point. And I don't think that had anything to do with replacing Timonen. That will most likely come in the off season.

yes. and he projects to be a nice little fourth line energy guy. but for the pens right now hell likely be going up against someone like patrice bergeron in the playoffs and get mauled.

but still. i like him as a nice depth player, but if he is a forward prospect to get excited about, you have organizational issues

I do see what you are saying, I think Gus would have been a smarter fill for that spot. Streit is a good player. He does bring some good things to the table. But overall, the bigger picture, it was a scared signing. Just my opinion.

I want Gustafsson in the lineup for his added mobility and overall play. But right now, Gustafsson can not do what Streit does on the ice, and he may never be able to do it. It was a necessary signing.

You are telling me they couldn't have signed a better stop gap to fill that position for a cheaper less amount of time?

Well if they could, who could they have signed. What player was available that they could've signed for less money and term that added what Streit has added to the lineup?

I was pretty leery at the Streit signing for the first semester. He seems to have settled in, though. I'm starting to almost like his game. It's not perfect, and he'll have to be sheltered. But he's not the awful, useless anchor he seemed at the beginning of the year. They still have to work on the blueline, but that's not an indictment of Streit.

We don't have someone that can be paired with him other than maybe Coburn who can skate well defensively. Kimmo years ago. But now. No one outside of him.
