And there's no need to include B.Schenn, Couturier, or Nick Cousins.

Yes, I do agree, he also takes power play time away from a younger player on the 2nd unit as well.

What young player is he taking PP time away from?

I see on Twitter that Carter is now on Crosby's wing for the Olympics with the other guy who doesn't deserve to be on Team Canada, Chris Kunitz, on the other wing.

This was just to show these 2 trades weren't terrible, yes LA did win a cup, but they also have Doughty, Voynov & Quick.

Carter missed a good chunk of games in Columbus, but still I like those numbers. Plus we have production from Schenn and Couturier.

I was speaking more to the term than the cap hit... the low base hit is nice, but not the basis of my position.
- Tomahawk

Sure, but Iginla is a 36 year old without a Cup. You can see why Boston is able to get him for one year - they're the best team in the East.

I hate the Olympics, the 19 day break, the selection process had a political flavor to it.

That's an interesting thought, and Iggy hand-picked Boston, too.

But what separates Chiarelli from Homer is he was able to take advantage of those circumstances to fill a need, whereas Homer was tossing prudence out the window in order to land a guy that wasn't helping their problems on the blueline.

- Tomahawk

In order for this to be factual, we would have to know that Iginla was willing to sign with the Flyers for one year, but Holmgren just went in another direction. And stating that Holmgren tossed prudence out the window is just an opinion. I'm of the opinion that it was a smart of quality signing. And if we want to throw in that it was a bad signing because it didn't help the blueline, we'd have to know that Holmgren chose signing Lecavalier over signing a defenseman that would help the blueline.

Correct, & if he had played the 35, (or so), games, his totals are still around what Voracek's are.

Vinny played center until he got hurt. There's no reason Schenn couldn't have developed as a winger if he had gotten the chance to stay there, but injuries dictated otherwise. Patrick Sharp and Jeff Carter managed the transition to wing pretty well, but people here freak out about centers moving to wing.
- Feanor

I honestly think that Schenn is equally good at either spot. I just think that they need to decide where they want to play him, and leave him there.

I think the most recent 2nd unit was...

Downie-Schenn-Lecavalier
Couturier-Streit

If Vinny wasn't there I guess Read or Raffl would be, but Vinny has by far the best shot on the team amongst forwards. So he deserves his spot, and (like Streit) is unlucky to not be on the top unit.

I think he's better at center. He seems to play well when he's centering a line without Briere or Vinny on it

Not only that, but their inefficient/wasteful use of cap space forces them to give out more term to FA's to get a manageable cap hit.

Imagine if they had Vinny's $4M+ of cap-space this year to throw at a UFA like Boyle to get him to accept a shorter term to minimize the risk.

Edit: or had cap-space last summer to get Streit on a shorter-term.

- Tomahawk

I disagree that the Flyers use of cap space is inefficient and wasteful. The Lecavalier signign is not going to stop the Flyers from making an offer to a player like Boyle at any term. The Flyers could've had 100M in Cap space last Summer. In my opinion, Streit wasn't signing for lesser term.

He's had equal struggles and successes at both spots.

The issue is, can he still be a good player, and will he be worth his cap hit. I believe that he will.
- MJL

Sure, but some of us don't. Without a crystal ball, there's no right or wrong to any of the opinions about VL.

Iginla is getting at least $5.5m this season, and the Bruins could face an overage penalty to start next season. It's disingenuous of you to act like his $1.8m base salary is in any way relevant when comparing Iginla and Lecavalier.

exactly, I made that point eariler. But Holmgren's incompetent and didn't get as good of a deal. Let's see how much Boston has to carry on the Cap next year for bonus overages. If they win the Cup, who cares. But if they don't?

I agree with that. I don't know that I'm right anymore then anyone else is wrong. But let's look at the evidence and make an educated guess. I know where that takes me.

And even though the kings can say they have the cup, the flyers didn't make the trades to win a cup the next season. They made an investment in the future and I think they are slowly heading the right way. They just need to be smart moving forward and I am confident they will be back as contenders.

In other posts, that Iginla had a 1.8M base salary was a large part of points made. And was compared ot Lecavalier's 4.5M.

What's the oulier? Lecavalier playing well or playing poorly? Pretty large sample size to go on. From what I see, it's simply about pessimism and optimism.
