Less accomplished. There seems to be a higher chance of him bombing or hitting his supposed high ceiling. Less of a known quantity.

At 18, how accomplished could he be?

That is great, thanks. But what were the rank and file scouts saying? Do any of our draftniks have any insight? Was he projected to be the two way stud he is now?
- MBFlyerfan

If he was, I doubt he would have lasted to the 49th pick.

As for Morin, at least one other team was trying to trade up and grab him....and that's just the one that basically admitted it. He's a bit of a project, but most also seem to feel he's a damned good prospect.

In fact, when there were rumors of the Flyers looking at Max Pacioretty, I asked a few Habs fans/bloggers I know, including Eric Engels, and Morin was a guy they all mentioned as part of the return. They all loved his game, and feel he will be a good one.

I don't pay attention to what comes from Tim P much.
- Just5

It wasn't coming from Tim P, it was coming from an NHL scout. Unless you think Tim was making it up.

Yea risky bc from everything I read he was viewed as a raw prospect. Where some others were viewed as more of a shoe in as a future top 4 D prospect. Their skills were more refined (Ristolainen, The other guy that went to Buffalo).

Are you talking about last season or this season for Morin?

- Just5

If you think about it many players selected are raw, I get who was on the board when the made the selection. Believe me I didn't mind him but like others he wasn't who I had in mind.

But they selected him & I hope the best for him and his career with the Flyers.

Instead Montreal took Mike McCarron who has in my viewings of the London Knights been invisible.

It's possible he did. Or it came from a Flyer Scout. It's a long 2 weeks he's got to think of something

I mean he just skates around & not all that smooth, misses hitting people, tries to much to intimidate people which doesn't work, & looks lost to the point he is either on the 3rd line if not the 4th.

Yes they did, he was a late camp cut I think.

Everything I've found had put Weber as the #42 ranked prospect overall, and the #11 ranked defenseman.

As a side note... Brayden Coburn was the #1 ranked defensive prospect that year

Might be a factor. Some guys get sent back & play with a chip on their shoulder, like Laughton. Others go back and let it bug them to the point of distraction

he was drafted a 17 year old. So your right, not even as much as an 18 or 19 year old

I mean he could be an example of one who doesn't put up big junior numbers but does at the NHL or he could just end up being a Hugh Jessiman.

McCarron never put up big numbers anywhere...Jessiman at least did well in collegiate hockey

How often do defenseman develop offense in the NHL when they weren't really scorers in Juniors? Thats not a rhetorical question. I'm wondering if and how often it happens.
- PhillySportsGuy

Well Shea Weber had 94pts in 190 games in Junior. Solid numbers, but certainly not top end offensive Dman numbers for Junior.

edit: Chara was another guy in who most scouts didn't see much offensive potential

Laughton never exactly set the world afire until after he was picked by the Flyers-good numbers, not great.

I do wonder what it would have taken to move up to 4 to select Jones. The 11th overall and ? Or even 7th to take Nurse. With Coots on the team I would have offered Laughton with the pick to Nashville for sure.

I wouldn't be amazed if Morin ends up better than Nurse in the long run

He was also on decent teams to start & not asked to do too much......but as he's gone on & earned more responsibility he ran with it.

I want that in our prospects.

Yep. Agreed.

I like having more prospect depth. Hockey's future just called Morin the top D prospect in the Q

Hopefully. From the little I've read it sounds like Nurse has made some real nice strides since the draft. Morin on the other hand, I haven't heard too much. But then again Morin is on the slow train to the big city.

I can agree with that one.

Only reason Laughton isn't wearing the "C" is because Oshawa didn't expect him back.

So i was going through the scoreboards, the Sixers got outscored by the Clippers in the 1st quarter, 46-15... Almost outscored by Jamal Crawford alone who has 14...

How in the world do you allow 46 in one quarter?
