Just looking at it now and Hossa's deal only pays him $1m per year for the final four seasons when he will be 38-42 years old. So unless they buy him out this summer I think Chicago will face some recapture penalties down the line.

I think both will get 8 x $9m.

In the short-medium term they benefit a lot from two cap circumventing contracts to Hossa and Keith, so they should be fine.

You think they might use their compliance buyout on Hossa? That deal...hard to tell if/when revenues keep increasing, but it could be a killer down the line with cap recapture, because there's no way in hell he's finishing that deal.

Ha! You're thinking what I'm thinking -- they almost have to buy him out this summer, don't they?

I could see him being like Teemu and still being great at age-42.

If he stays injury free and is still great at that age I doubt he'll be happy playing for one million US dollars. That'll be chump change in the '20s, so the KHL would be very tempting, especially for a European.

I think it would be prudent to buy him out, but tough to swallow considering how good Hossa still is.

Or it could be a great way for a small market team to get to the cap floor in a few years. Small actual $$, high on the cap.

Question for anyone... how does the retained salary work. Are you retaining the cap hit, or are you retaining both the cap hit AND paying the salary?

Because that would allow a team like Nashville be able to compete so much more if they could retain Cap hit without paying salary. For example... If Nashville wants to trade Weber to the Flyers, they could get more, if they retained a portion of his cap hit. It would help them stay above the floor, and they would get a better deal. But if they still have to pay that portion of salary... then retaining the cap hit, doesnt help teams like Nashville at all.

I believe that both cap hit and salary (equal amounts) are traded. So I don't think you can trade half of a $1M salary and half of a $5M cap hit; you would only be able to trade the same amount of each, with the maximum allowable amount being half of the lower number (otherwise, teams could acquire a player and make money/lower cap hit). So in the case of that player, the trading team would be able to retain $500K salary and lose $500K cap space.

Toews deserves 8 year @ $8M as a starting point.
- jmatchett383

This sounds about right to me. Also, I'm not so sure Kane gets as much as Toews will next contract. Kane is a beast offensively and his defensive game has improved, but Toews just brings so much more to the table consistently every night. Either way, will be interesting to see.

It will be a ratio similar to the Carter and Richards deals. Toews will get the bigger money, and Kane will make slightly less.

"Salary and bonus obligations must be retained at the same percentage as the cap hit." - Flyers Faithful

So 50/50 split of cap hit, means 50/50 split of all remaining salary and bonuses owed.

Alright, but lets take Hossa. If Chicago trade him when he is only makeing 1 million a year but his cap hit is still 5 million... what would happen if chicago retained 2 million? I mean the guy doesnt make 2 million, but his cap hit is above 2 million...

If Chicago retained 2/5 of his hit, they'd pay 2/5 of his remaining salary/bonuses.

Got it. Now... Is it possible to trade money in deals, like they did with Lindros. So if Nashville wanted to keep 2 million of weber's cap hit for 4 years, could the Flyers give them 8 million in cash in the deal to cover the salary?

No provision for trading cash since advent of cap system.

Also, I had a dream last night where the Flyers did actually acquire Weber. I don't remember the details of the trade. It was a good dream.

See, if they wanted smaller teams to be able to compete then they should allow teams to hold onto cap hit without having to hold onto salary... But a team can only have an X amount of "dead" cap space. The teams would be able to trade its players to cap straped teams, while keeping the cap hit... bringing them above the minimum without paying the salary... Which would allow them to spend more money in FA and to resign thier own players.

I heard it speculated each would get near 12 million a year.

That's what Bob McKenzie was saying earlier this year. Yikes.
