vanek will cost a lot and they need to get top end D if they are giving up those kind of assets
- Marc D

What did the Islanders have to give up to get Vanek? Another pending UFA and a first right? At this point of the season, if the Flyers have up a roster play like Read and a 2nd they might take it over another teams 1st.

Vanek might be a bold move to make another trade for a top d-man. It would be right online for what I have been saying... Get a pure goal scorer and get a top defenseman.

matt moulson and a first and a second

a lot for an impending UFA

vanek is going to test the UFA market, Flyers would be stupid to trade anything for him right now

There is no arrogance at all, they are competitors and the gold medal final in 2010 was a great game, Canada has never slagged the Americans at all. Arrogance is the US Olympic Basketball Team.
- Daceroni

Ha. So you dont think a lot of Canadians look down on American fans as inferrior? I know that is a fact.

In my defense, it's not my fault. My Wife is a Country fan. I've been to some Country concerts that I actually enjoyed. But others were brutal. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

The Isles gave up a 30 goal scorer, plus a 1st & 2nd to get Vanek. They're going to want a similar return.

Far too much for the Flyers to pay for a pending UFA.

That was the price early in the season when there was a lot of hockey to play... The price would be drastically less now...

It would be risky, but sometime you have to grab your junk and jump in balls first.

Moulson is an UFA also and neither was going to sign for thier clubs... the 1st and 2nd was to make up for the playing differnce between vanek and moulson... So in reality the price at the beginning of the season was a 1st and 2nd.

And what happens when Vanek walks at the end of the year, to go play where he really wants to play?

The price for a player like Vanek goes up as you get closer to the deadline, not down. You offer Vanek as a rental, teams are going be lined up to bid on him. Driving up the price.

Hopefully you convince him not too. Hopefully he likes Philly, and they are able to give him a good enough contract to keep him here. Ask Briere to call him and sing Philly Praises. Put him on a line with Giroux and let him see how much he can score here....

Hopefully he doesnt walk.

I'd figure out a different plan!

If Holmgren gives up youth to trade for a player like vanek. I'm going to switch political parties and join the Fire Holmgren tea party!

Agreed -- I'm as aggressive as they come, and even I don't want a piece of that action -- this is a player who clearly has a destination in mind, whether it be Minnesota or somewhere else.

Buffalo had to know that; they didn't even bother trying to re-sign him. It would do the Flyers absolutely no good to expend even a cheap asset for this player.

I doubt anyone is going to give more then a 1st and 2nd for a pending UFA for only a few short months.

How do you know his destination isnt just a place that isnt penny pinching teams like Buffalo and Islanders. Minnesota is just another Buffalo. Maybe he is looking for a better front office like the Flyers... Makes sense.

But the rest of the league knows there is zero change he stays with the Isles. The league can wait it out and drive the price down a bit. They'll get a decent return but I highly doubt it will be equal to what they gave up. Not a good spot for the Isles to be in.

How does waiting it out drive down the price? Vanek will be a top prize as a deadline deal. Teams will be bidding against each other for Vanek. They'll get top draft picks and top prospects for Vanek. If not roster players. That was part of the whole idea of trading for Vanek by the Isles. They knew if they can't sign him, he's a bigger trade chip at the deadline then Moulson is, to add to the future.

Because the league can dictate the price, or the Isles get nothing. Sure, a GM can come along and offer a 30 goal scorer & a 1st for him, but it doesnt make sense to. Everyone is going to come in low.

The League can't dictate the price. The team trading the player dictates the price. All the Isles have to do at this point, unless someone makes an offer that they really like, is turn down every offer. As the trade deadline get's closer and closer, the price goes up, not down. Teams start bidding against each other for a player like that.

what are you talking about of course the league dictates the price
the isles list their goods the market decides it's not worth the price listed effectively leaving isles with nothing in return jesus you can't even argue that

I think your right, everyone is going to come in low, and eventually right before the deadline 1 team will blink. But lets not forget that by defination, playoff teams typically dont have great draft picks or prospects to give up.... so if the Flyers are offering a Roster player like Read and a 2nd, it might be more intrging.

Look at the trade deadline history of the League. Top players and top draft picks are moved for top players every year. Right now, the offers won't be as high as they will be as the bidding intensifies closer to the deadline. The only thing that could stifle the market this year, is the number of teams in LTIR.
