A friend's little sister grew up in Poplar Hill, and now lives in Seatle area. A few months ago they got a few cm of snow, she posted on FB what a joke it was that the area was shut down.
A few hours later, her husband posted on FB that with her Canadian Pride she jumped in her car to go, then proceeded to get stuck just up the street, when her car could not make it up a little hill.
My guess is that many cars in the States don't even have all season tires. likely run on mostly summer tires to last longer in the heat. then when snow hits, and there is no salt/sand put down, and the tires are hard rubber, they get into trouble fast. - vermie22
that had to be more than just two inches tho
did you see the pics of atlanta? you could still see the pavement |

I produced two kids with that. Oh wait.... - hscesq
so how big a deal it is relies on perspective? lol |

please Colin.. two inches.
people will ride bicycles in that up here. - Dozzer
yeah but like I said, and vermie added...their cars dont even likely have all seasons on them...my summer tires would be a mess in any amount of snow...plus you have drivers who have never or rarely driven in snow...you have a rough situation on your hands. |

yeah, it is quite comical....but then again, Im sure none of them have experience driving in snow, or have snow tires for that matter. So it does make it tricky. - Colin Dambrauskas
that wasn't the issue in Atlanta. the issue is that downtown was shut down and everyone sent home from work (especially government employees, it's the state capital) around the same time. and Atlanta in general is a sprawling city with inadequate public transit, so most people working downtown drive in. so what happens when a city with an over-reliance on cars sends everyone to the suburbs at the same time? |

Think we also take for granted how much the layers of salt and sand the snow plows put down make a difference up here. |

H, that tells a tale. Measure in millimetres, it sounds far longer when you do. |

That's it right there. Lived in Toronto and then Michigan, and both would keep schools etc open with 10+ inches of snow because they have the infrastructure to plow/salt etc.
I moved to Nashville a couple of years ago and 2 inches of snow will close schools for a couple of days. Atlanta is in a similar boat. |

If a few idiots locked their doors and walked, I can see why everyone else was stuck for 12 hours

You know I have to say, though it can get annoying, without the Jbold's and UG's of the Hockeybuzz where everyone agrees with each other and it turns into Snowbuzz....it can get stale around here |
