There are more teams in the NHL who can legitimately say they are Cup contenders than in any other sport: I count 8 - Chi, StL, Col, Annie, SJ, Pit, Bos, TB - any other league close?

True, but i could say the same thing about reducing the number of teams for every league. Same reasons apply. Not that many here watch Bas-ket-ball but that league would be light years better with half the amount of teams. NFL could benefit from like 4 less teams.

Baseball....theres no hope, its just a god awful boring sport, if youre into the sabermetric stuff i guess it could be interesting but I'm not, and I just use that league as a sleep aid during the summer after NHL playoffs are over.

How do you figure? Its the same concept, with less teams there comes less available roster spots meaning only the best of the very best would stick around. Of course, there would still be draft busts, and free agents that end up sucking. But its far less likely to happen with less spots open. Same goes for every league.
