Because you only trade that pick if you get full value for it. If there is a deal for a top 2 guy that is still an RFA then yes you do it. But not taking a chance on someone that "might" be the guy. If you have not noticed...teams don't give up those types of Dmen. So we may have to draft and develop. - Iggysbff
But isn't drafting Ekblad, for example, "taking a chance on someone that might be the guy". Isn't that exactly what the draft is?
They definitely need to get value for that pick, but this is the "bold" move that was promised by management. And to get value, they have to give up value. So convince the teams to give up that kind of Dman with a significant offer. The Oilers are the team in need right now. So you have to be willing to "pay" for it.
It is time to take that step. This puts the capper on the rebuild, exactly like other teams have done it in their process. Chicago did it with Hossa. Los Angeles with Carter and Richards, Pittsburgh with Guerin (at the time). It completes the cycle that the team has had to struggle through. |

The question I was responding too was whether we draft Ekblad or a forward to replace gagner. Im not saying we should use our pick to draft ekblad instead of trading it but honestly tell me which dman is out there that has the upside of Ekblad who could be had for just that pick? - Oilfan19
So give more than just that pick. An example is a Shea Webber. Not saying he is available (although there is always the rumblings that he might be) But to get him who is establishes and not just "potential" or "upside", wouldn't that be worth more then just that pick.
The perspective becomes that the Oilers seem to think that they are the ones with all the assets and that other teams should be overpaying them to get what they have. But they are the team on the outside of the playoffs again. They are the team that needs to get back into them. They are the team that may need to "pay" a little more to get that piece that they need now and really move forward.
Do the Oilers really want another top 5 (approximately) pick again next year? They weren't supposed to be there this year, but there they are. Put in the pieces now, not in a few years when they are developed. |

Bjugstad wouldn't get traded for Gretzky.
Edit: yes he would. |

Or who the Oilers can convince teams to make available by being wiling to offer up instead of thinking teams will just hand it over. Make them an offer they can't refuse. If the players they give up become better in the long run, but the Oilers add the piece(s) that they need to get into the playoffs and contend. They still win the trade for what they need. |

The whole reason Oiler fans are cautious to see ebs and hall and all of them go is because the is nobody waiting in the wings to take over for them. If we trade Hall there is no top line Lwinger to take over for him. And I think that if you have a guy like Ekblad available you take him. If there was a deal where Mac T felt like he wins outright he does it. But no point in making a deal to send away a guy like Hall, who we suffered some bad years to get, unless you win the deal hands down. |

the first 3 rumors are hilarious
Gagner is not the guy who's going to get "the" d man for the Oilers. Who knows if any of them will but it will not be him. |

I see your point, but I don't feel that shipping away one of those guys at a bargain price helps in any way. |
