Gagner for Kulikov

So if the Oilers can trade Gagner in a very good deal for the kind of defenceman they are needing, and considering they have Darnell Nurse in the system, would they still be eager to draft Ekblad (assuming that they stay in the approximate position that they are).

Or would they then be looking to "replace" Gagner with a Reinhart or a Bennett? Or go for some forward size in a Dreseital, Ritchie, or Virtanen.

I'm pretty biased as I want Ekblad for the Flames.

Seems like a good fit really. If he stays in NY and ends of walking - Snow finally needs to be fired.

I don't think anyone understood the deal. Maybe they figured they'd get more at the deadline for Vanek than Moulson, or they'd have a chance to sign Vanek long term. Now they need to get a decent 1st and a 2nd round pick just to break even. If they can also get a decent roster player for next season in the trade, I think they'd come out better off than if they kept Moulson.

To me the only reason to replace Gagner would be to provide two things he isn't: big/defensive and experienced.

So even if they trade Gags I don't see them replacing him wholesale with another draft pick.

The defense needs a lot of work still.

I understand Ekblad is highly sought after. But why do oil fans want him. Defencemen take time to devolup and we do not have time. We need help now. It does no good if ekblad is ready to play by the time Hall's contract expires. Trade the pick big Mac.

I'd still suggest that they package the pick for more immediate help. The time for waiting and development of teenagers is past for the Oilers rebuild. It was a very important part of it, and they have done it. But now it's time to get the players in that can impact now. They need to at least be challenging for a playoff spot next season. Not waiting a couple more years until Ekblad (or whoever they may draft) is ready to go. Get a more veteran, experienced second line center (who can potentially play 1st line if needed). Get an experience power forward. Try for an established number 1 or 2 defenceman. I don't mean an old player, but somebody in that mid to late 20's range.

Will Oilers fans really still put of with the "patience" mantra that has been preached to them? And if they continue to struggle through a "patience" period of time, the other youth may start to look to go elsewhere when their contracts come up. then it was all for nothing. Get the impact and help now.

Because you only trade that pick if you get full value for it. If there is a deal for a top 2 guy that is still an RFA then yes you do it. But not taking a chance on someone that "might" be the guy. If you have not noticed...teams don't give up those types of Dmen. So we may have to draft and develop.

The question I was responding too was whether we draft Ekblad or a forward to replace gagner. Im not saying we should use our pick to draft ekblad instead of trading it but honestly tell me which dman is out there that has the upside of Ekblad who could be had for just that pick?
